    Nishikori opens Brisbane bid against Matosevic Monday play gets underway at the Brisbane International with fifth seed Kei Nishikori taking on Australia’s Marinko Matosevic. The players are joined in first-round action by veterans Julien Benneteau and Jarkko Nieminen.

    Fifth seed Kei Nishikori completed the 2012 season with a 37-18 record. The 23-year-old snagged his first title in more than four years, having sealed a championship-winning run in Tokyo (def. Raonic). Nishikori will be making his third appearance at the Brisbane International, where he advanced to the final eight in his 2009 debut.

    World No. 49 Marinko Matosevic compiled a modest 17-19 mark in 2012. The 27-year-old Melbourne resident is seeking his first main-draw victory at the Brisbane International.

    Julien Benneteau vs. Jarkko Nieminen

    World No. 35 Julien Benneteau trails world No. 41 Jarkko Nieminen 5-0 in the series. The players last met for the 2012 title in Sydney, where the championship went to the Finn in straight sets.

    Benneteau concluded the 2012 season with a 27-23 record. The 31-year-old Frenchman is bidding for his first victory at the Brisbane International since 2009.

    Nieminen built a 26-27 mark last year. The 31-year-old Finn will be making his eighth effort at the event, where he reached the final in 2007 (Adelaide, lost to Llodra).
