  • Ferrer faces Berdych in must-win for Spain

    11/17/12 11:22 PM | Kelli DeMario
Ferrer faces Berdych in must-win for Spain World No. 5 David Ferrer looks to level the tie for Spain, after Czechs Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek won their doubles rubber over Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez. Ferrer and Berdych will contest their ninth career meeting on Sunday.

World No. 5 David Ferrer holds a 5-3 series edge against world No. 6 Tomas Berdych. The players last met at the 2011 World Tour Finals, where a round-robin match went to the Czech in three sets. Ferrer leads 2-1 in hard-court matches played.

Ferrer is back on court after defeating former world No. 8 Radek Stepanek in Friday's singles rubber. The 30-year-old improved to 22-4 in Davis Cup singles competition following his straight-set defeat of the veteran Czech.

"I played very good. I'm very happy with my game," Ferrer said. "He played really good when he played back. It's not easy to play Radek on this type of court, because it's really fast. I received really good. Maybe this was the key."

Prior to his victory in doubles, Berdych fought to defeat world No. 11 Nicolas Alamgro in five sets late Friday. The 27-year-old survived the marathon singles rubber in nearly four hours, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3.

"It's incredible," Berdych said after the doubles win. "It's just one point. We'll do everything for that. I'm ready to do it tomorrow. I'll try to come with my strong game, and with the crowd on my back, it would be a good combination to make it."

Prediction: Ferrer to level 2-2 for Spain.
