  • Federer, Murray collide at World Tour Finals

    11/11/12 4:45 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer, Murray collide at World Tour Finals A spot in the title match will be at stake when Roger Federer faces Andy Murray on Sunday in London. The winner will go up againt either Novak Djokovic or Juan Martin Del Potro.

Roger Federer and Andy Murray will be squaring of for the 19th time in their careers and for the fifth time this season when they do battle in the semifinals of the World Tour Finals on Sunday.

Murray leads the head-to-head series 10-8, including 9-7 on hard courts. They have split their 2012 meeting at two wins apiece, but Murray has emerged victorious twice in a row. After Federer prevailed in Dubai and for the Wimbledon title, Murray dominated the gold-medal match and a Shanghai semifinal showdown.

The Scot's triumph at the London Olympics paved the way to even greater things, as he went on to capture his first Grand Slam at the U.S. Open. Murray hasn't been quite as on fire this fall as he was last year, but he posted a solid 2-1 record in round-robin play this week. The world No. 3 beat Tomas Berdych in three sets, lost to Novak Djokovic in three, then defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straights.

Federer secured the top spot in Group A despite falling to Juan Martin Del Potro 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4 on Saturday. The second-ranked Swiss preceded that effort with straight-set defeats of Janko Tipsarevic and David Ferrer. Federer, well-rested after skipping the Paris Masters, is 70-11 for the season.

Nobody in the London field has been at their absolute best this week, but a slight edge in current form appears to be siding with Murray. Home-court advantage will also help the crowd favorite, who should be able to get past Federer one more time and earn a place in the final.

My heart and logic say Andy in 3 tough sets
7-5, 6-7, 7-6

ed251137 , 11/11/12 6:46 AM

A little light relief

ed251137 , 11/11/12 8:46 AM

WEll this match will be played 2nd and will undoubtedly be a long one and a pressure filled one , the winner will anyways be toast for Djoko in final with less recovery time.

sanju , 11/11/12 9:01 AM

How many times has that been said and how many times have we been proved wrong?

This applies when it is one of the big boys playing the rest but much less so when they meet each other in an important final.

ed251137 , 11/11/12 10:01 AM

With Fed's form being poor and the balls bouncing much higher, Murray should win this encounter- Murray to win in 2 :( :(

abhirf , 11/11/12 10:05 AM

Murray is playing better tennis at the moment than Fed.But I have a feeling that after losing to Murray twice in a row Fed will come prepared for this new version of Murray.

Fed for the win in 3 sets with one tie break.

netcord , 11/11/12 11:03 AM

You might have expected he would be ready for Delpo after what happened in Basel. But it didn't pan out that way.

ed251137 , 11/11/12 11:17 AM

Andy in 2 sets... Nice and easy :)

zare , 11/11/12 2:13 PM

Murray in 2 easy sets is my prediction. His game is clean and should be in the final

tennismania , 11/11/12 2:37 PM

as a muzzateer of many years, it's a bit unnerving to see everyone calling it for muzz all of a sudden. strange new territory and if anything makes me feel less confident.

that said, i'm sticking with my original call - muzz in a tight 3- setter.

alex , 11/11/12 4:28 PM

looks like sanju might not be right.....

RickyDimon , 11/11/12 4:44 PM

nice prediction Zare...

willmw101 , 11/11/12 5:46 PM

Well thank you willma"NO WAY",
You see... it's not difficult, just try to act like normal person, nobody will notice ;)

zare , 11/11/12 7:44 PM

error, error, ace, error, error, break. 1-0.

RickyDimon , 11/11/12 9:03 PM

murray is just too strong for roger these days, alex. it's not about being a fan or not... murray will beat fed three times out of four

croc , 11/11/12 9:07 PM

back on serve

RickyDimon , 11/11/12 9:35 PM

This is anybodys match. Roger has suddenly sprung back to life and snatched the break back

sanju , 11/11/12 9:35 PM

Anyone who said Murray will crush Roger forgot this is indoors and Roger will nver ever get crushed indoors

sanju , 11/11/12 9:37 PM

Roger in the mood now

OnTheRise , 11/11/12 9:38 PM

Everyone seems to have borrowed from Rafas playbook..pulverize the Roger backhand to death

sanju , 11/11/12 9:42 PM

Half volley masterpiece

OnTheRise , 11/11/12 9:49 PM

Ooops, two set points for Roger...

danica , 11/11/12 9:57 PM

i insist, federer is being bullied

croc , 11/11/12 9:57 PM

woooooooooooooo!!!! Roger! Roger! ROGER!!!! C'MON!!!! LOL :)

sky , 11/11/12 10:00 PM

Bully yeah? He just won the 1st set. Infact Murray has more UE than Fed in 1st set..14 errors to 12 from Fed..when does that happen?

sanju , 11/11/12 10:00 PM

Roger simply kept his calm. Wins 1st set

OnTheRise , 11/11/12 10:01 PM

Zare, what happened to those english lessons? Must've quit huh?

willmw101 , 11/11/12 10:02 PM

Fed has that steely look in his eyes now..saw it when he won 1st set.If he would have lost 1st set, the match would be over quick..now I wont be surprised even if Fed edges it in 2 instead of 3.

sanju , 11/11/12 10:02 PM

Murray s playing like pure crap now..throwing balls all over

sanju , 11/11/12 10:06 PM

What is Murray upto? Horrible. This is the prolem with this guy..you never know which one will turn up..40-0 up and down break point

sanju , 11/11/12 10:12 PM

Forget home crowd support :-(

ed251137 , 11/11/12 10:13 PM

woooooooooo!!! Roger BREAKS!!!! C'MON!!! LOL :)

sky , 11/11/12 10:13 PM

Lol 40-0 up and lost his serve..rudiculous

Anyways its befitting that the final be played between Fed and Djoko..The No 1 n No 2

sanju , 11/11/12 10:13 PM

Both are playing so badly..I mean theres just no joy in this contest..theres hardly any rallies, any shot making, its a damp squib

sanju , 11/11/12 10:16 PM

What's wrong with Andy.... 48% first service... terrible!!!

zare , 11/11/12 10:16 PM

zare forget his first serve..hes playing like hes a kid in the park just enjoying hitting every shot into the net

sanju , 11/11/12 10:18 PM

Was about to say time Andy stopped playing to Fed's backhand - getting too predictable - so he changes direction and goes long. Ugh.

Not enjoying this one little bit.

ed251137 , 11/11/12 10:20 PM

This is where I miss Rafa the most..his work ethic..He plays every point as if it really matters..ull rarely see shay play from him ever routinely dumping balls all over.

sanju , 11/11/12 10:21 PM

Federer will raise his level.. only if Murray do lol

OnTheRise , 11/11/12 10:22 PM

meant shabby play above

sanju , 11/11/12 10:22 PM

Fed doesn't look better... disappointing SF.

zare , 11/11/12 10:22 PM

Very disappointing..it doesnt even look remotely close to a No 2 and No 3 playing

sanju , 11/11/12 10:23 PM

washing dishes is more fun than this. good night guys. take care!

croc , 11/11/12 10:24 PM

I was just wondering. Where's that return of serve Murray had in Shanghai??

OnTheRise , 11/11/12 10:26 PM

woooooooo!!!! the FED BREAKS again!!! C'MON!!! :)

sky , 11/11/12 10:28 PM

Alex, be a love and pass the tissues :-((((((((((((

ed251137 , 11/11/12 10:29 PM

Fed haters and Murray's fans! Please don't watch this at home. Hehe

OnTheRise , 11/11/12 10:29 PM

Wooooooo Hooooooo!!! Commis to Murray Fans! Congrats to FED FEDfans! C'MON!!!! We are in the FINALS!!!!!!! Wooooooooo!!!! :)

sky , 11/11/12 10:32 PM

There won't be a 3rd straight win for Andy. Fed wasn't going to have it! Good job, now onto the final.

aegis , 11/11/12 10:32 PM

Congrats roger and fans.

Very poor performance by muzz tonight. didn't seem to know what he wanted to do at times, and then when he decided he couldn't find the skills to execute. his old favourites even deserted him - backhands, drop shots etc.

Disappointing end to a wonderful year, for which muzz can be very proud. Broken through at last, and what a wonderful summer.

now for 2 months of tennis hibernation.

onward and upward in 2013 muzz.

alex , 11/11/12 10:36 PM

Fed was great

RickyDimon , 11/11/12 10:37 PM

Maestro! Never doubt the man.

chr18 , 11/11/12 10:39 PM

Murray is outta here in straight sets.

tennis2011 , 11/11/12 10:50 PM

Emiliano5: you keep jinxing andy over and over again.

rfzr , 11/11/12 10:51 PM

Jinxing ? Lol, I was rooting for Andy, indeed. I wanted him to have his revenge against Djokovic.

Anyways, this was really unexpected. Federer really played well again after a couple of months of rubbish tennis.

Let's see if he can keep this level for Djokovic.

Emiliano55 , 11/11/12 10:58 PM

Nice prediction Zare. As usual

willmw101 , 11/11/12 11:06 PM

If Fed plays like that against Nole, the WTF is his again. he likes the indoors, no?

#WOW
#GOAT
#Humble
#Respect

Conspirator , 11/11/12 11:20 PM

Goat, my foot.
With a rigged draw, as I mentioned earlier, Fed goes fresh like a rose. He doesn't try too hard against Del Po. The other two are easy for him. Poor Muzza, pobably not fully fit, goes through a grueling Group A.
Djokovic too is similarly hampered but he is mentally strong. So, hopefully he can deny Frauderer another based-on-rigged-draw title

holdserve , 11/12/12 12:47 AM

Lol man, you really hate Federer.

Emiliano55 , 11/12/12 1:39 AM

That same old fart again. Can someone explain me how a chap who is 31 yrs old, playing matches on back2back days, can turnup more fresh than his counterpart who is 25yrs. of age, had a day of rest after 1.5 hrs of match. Injuries? As far as I can remember Muzz hasnt played more than Fed in the past 1 month.
Accept it, Fed can beat them any day. Yesterday, once Fed got into his rhythm and had every answer for Muzza's variety, Andy went out of ideas and forgot even his basic game plan. That's really one serious concern area for Muzz. Even after winning an Olympic Gold and a GS, he is still not capable of holding up mentally against big guys in important matches, still not able to finish matches as quickly as he should. Djoko learned from Fed and Rafa when and how to seize an opportunity when it presents itself and improved upon that aspect. Look where he is now. Under Lendl, Andy has improved his game. Needs a little brushing on mental part too. Let's see how he performs in 2013.

Congrats ROGER! Never ceases to amaze. Many (including myself) counted him out, and he proved all wrong once again! Today's another big match against Nole. Let's see if he can pull it off all once again!

abhirf , 11/12/12 7:45 AM

Lol man, you really hate Federer.
Emiliano55, 11/

it is not hate, Emiliano55, pure jealousy for holdserve.

velliat53 , 11/12/12 8:07 AM

I was hoping that both Murray and Delpo came through and either one winning the WTF would be nice, especially if it was Delpo. Too bad it's not meant to be, both came out short, and that's why they're not no1 and no.2.

Nole vs Fed it shall be, there's still excitement for me, to see who triumphs on this surface, and who ends the season on a high, having the positive H2H this season.

luckystar , 11/12/12 8:07 AM

abhirf, you are delusional like all Fed fans. You seem not to know that Group B was a cakewalk and obviously part of a rigged draw to ensure Fed would not get exhausted.
As for how a 31 year old Fed is still in the reckoning, are you suspecting him of something?

holdserve , 11/12/12 3:58 PM

Cut the crap about draws. They put Novak and Andy in the same group so they can meet in the final.. No.1 vs home boy. That was it. Glad that Federer had another plan lol

OnTheRise , 11/12/12 5:55 PM

^^ With all due respect, OnTheRise, I don't think they would prefer Djokovic to Federer in the final.

nadline , 11/12/12 6:15 PM

I'm not being disrespectful to Djokovic, that's just the way it is.

nadline , 11/12/12 6:16 PM

nadline is right. obviously the dream final was Fed-Murray. At least they got it in the semis.

RickyDimon , 11/12/12 6:31 PM

maybe but if so,, the best thing was to put Murray and Federer in the same group so they can meet twice in RR and Final.

anyway the better man will win tonight, Murray did not deserve it. he lost to Djoko and Federer..
