• Ferrer, Tipsarevic ready for rematch of U.S. Open thriller

    11/10/12 1:28 AM | Ricky Dimon
Ferrer, Tipsarevic ready for rematch of U.S. Open thriller David Ferrer is still in search of a semifinal spot in London heading into more round-robin action on Saturday. Up next for the Spaniard is Janko Tipsarevic.

David Ferrer and Janko Tipsarevic will be going head-to-head for the fifth time in their careers and for the second time this season when the wrap up round-robin play at the World Tour Finals on Saturday night.

Ferrer leads the series 3-1, including 2-1 on hard courts. Their only meeting since 2008 came a few months ago in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. One of the best matches of the year saw Ferrer survive 6-3, 6-7(5), 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(4).

Tipsarevic will be hard-pressed to make this anywhere near as competitive because he is finishing his 2012 campaign in brutal form. The ninth-ranked Serb is a disappointing 9-8 since the U.S. Open and his only impressive tournament--a quarterfinal showing in Paris--ended in retirement. So far this week, Tipsarevic has gotten blown out by Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro.

Ferrer, on the other hand, is one of the hottest players on tour right now and he is still alive for a semifinal berth in London. The fifth-ranked Spaniard has followed up his first career Masters title with a three-set win over Del Potro followed by a 6-4, 7-6(5) loss to Federer. Ferrer is an awesome 73-15 for the season.

Under normal circumstances, Tipsarevic would have a strong chance in this matchup on an indoor hard court. Based on current form, however, this will almost certainly result in a straight-set triumph for Ferrer.

predict the amount of time Tipsarevic lasts against Ferrer. Winner gets to be one of the next guest experts.

I will start and say Tipsarevic lasts one hour and 11 minutes.

RickyDimon , 11/10/12 1:36 AM

I say Tipsy will last one hour and 30 minutes!

Nativenewyorker , 11/10/12 6:52 AM

Ferrer is hot against almost anybody other than the top four...he hasnt faced any of the big 4 in winning the titles he did lately...I would say Devydenko was a better player in his prime years than Ferrer...but Ferrer certainly has maximized his potential...I still remember Devydenko was quite a favourite to win 2010 AO open..he was playing such scarily good tennis prior to that...I dont remember anybody really thought Ferrer to be a serious contender for any of the majors...

netcord , 11/10/12 8:32 AM

tipsarevic to retire being down 2-6, 2-5

croc , 11/10/12 8:44 AM

tipsy for the win after 2 hours of entertaing tennis ;-)

netcord , 11/10/12 9:54 AM

i mean 'entertaining' tennis....

netcord , 11/10/12 9:56 AM

He simply cant humiliate himself again. I'm guessing he will make more effort and last for 2hrs 20min

ed251137 , 11/10/12 10:05 AM

Tips will last one hour 23 mins

tennis2011 , 11/10/12 4:57 PM

Well, I suppose they could surprise us. 200 points not to be sniffed at.

Delpo and Fed have qualified for SFs, but their position there depends on the result of the match Ferru vs. Tipsy.

There are 3 scenarios left:
Singles Group B qualification scenarios after the completion of the 2nd round of the event's group stage:
3) Regardless of score, if J. DEL POTRO defeats R. FEDERER and J. TIPSAREVIC defeats D. FERRER, then J. DEL POTRO wins the group and R. FEDERER qualifies 2nd.

6) If J. DEL POTRO defeats R. FEDERER in 3 sets and D. FERRER defeats J. TIPSAREVIC in 2 sets, then R. FEDERER wins the group and J. DEL POTRO qualifies 2nd.

7) If J. DEL POTRO defeats R. FEDERER in 3 sets and D. FERRER defeats J. TIPSAREVIC in 3 sets, then R. FEDERER wins the group and J. DEL POTRO qualifies 2nd.

Ferru didn't reach the SFs, but other Spanish men did. Spanish duo Marcel Granollers & Marc Lopez won today (some minutes ago) and qualified 2nd in their group in doubles.

Viva Marcel & Marc !!!

I think, Rafa is happy!

Augustina08 , 11/10/12 8:09 PM

Fantastic achievement for Marc & Marcel and I am sure Rafa is very happy for them.

Vamos & good luck in the semis.

schatz , 11/10/12 9:16 PM

Ricky's predicted match length has just gone out of the window.

ed251137 , 11/10/12 9:48 PM

And there go the predictions by Tennis2011 and NNY

ed251137 , 11/10/12 10:00 PM

1 set all a much more competitive match than expected so far.

tennis2011 , 11/10/12 10:04 PM

But Ferrer is very, very weary. It must be so hard for him to summon up his normal intensity when his fate is already sealed.

ed251137 , 11/10/12 10:20 PM

Tips started well but he is fading fast

tennis2011 , 11/10/12 10:24 PM

This is going to be a 6-1 or 6-2 set for Ferrer

tennis2011 , 11/10/12 10:26 PM

Netcord was being sarcastic but actually is going to be closest on calling the length of time. lol. About the only entertainment was waiting for Hawkeye to come up on the screen.

ed251137 , 11/10/12 10:37 PM

Ferru won the match. I didn't fight fot nothing. He earned 200 points & money.

Vamos Ferru!

Augustina08 , 11/10/12 10:39 PM

Correction to 10:39 PM:

... HE didn't fight fot nothing...

Augustina08 , 11/10/12 10:47 PM

At least Tipsy tried to make a fist of the match but 39 UEs to 16 winners..........says it all.

Congratulations to Daveeed. You deserve a few days well earned rest between now and DC

ed251137 , 11/10/12 10:52 PM

Federer vs Murray and Djokovic vs Del Potro

tennis2011 , 11/10/12 10:56 PM

Tips and Tsonga were very disappointing at this event

tennis2011 , 11/10/12 10:59 PM

Oh darn! Tipsy decided to really play this one! Well, there goes another prediction out the window!

Nativenewyorker , 11/11/12 4:28 AM

the right 4 made it to the semis

RickyDimon , 11/11/12 5:01 AM

Agree wholeheartedly.

Ferrer's comments about the scheduling of his match are interesting:

ed251137 , 11/11/12 8:27 AM

Even Ricky didn't seem convinced - in spite of the headline - that this match would live up to the billing.

ed251137 , 11/11/12 11:06 AM

live up to what billing?

this match wasn't BILLED to be any good!!!

RickyDimon , 11/11/12 3:22 PM

I'm sure other people, apart from myself, would also have inferred from 'Ready for rematch of USO thriller' that a repeat performance was anticipated.

You do enjoy called me out dont you :-((

ed251137 , 11/11/12 3:43 PM

I said I wasn't having a dig and was only commenting in order to bump that wretched Spam thread down the list, so there.

ed251137 , 11/11/12 3:48 PM

Typo @ 3.:43 'calling' not called.

I bet you were just getting back at me because my time prediction was much closer than yours ;-)

ed251137 , 11/11/12 3:59 PM

i just don't think anyone (including me, who predicted Ferrer in straights), billed this as a potentially great match.

headlines (unless you're Cheryl) after for drawing readers to an article
