• Ferrer back in action against Del Potro

Ferrer back in action against Del Potro After one day of rest following his triumph in Paris, David Ferrer will contest his London opener on Tuesday. Basel champion Juan Martin Del Potro is up first for the Spaniard.

David Ferrer sure could have used 2011 scheduling in 2012. Last year, there was a week off in between the Paris Masters and the World Tour Finals. This year--no such week.

Ferrer captured the first Masters title of his career on Sunday, stopping Polish qualifier Jerzy Janowicz. Just two days later, he will be back on the court for the first installment of Group B round-robin action when he goes up against Juan Martin Del Potro.

If there is good news for Ferrer (other than that he is playing great tennis), it's that he has completely owned Del Potro of late. The Spaniard has won seven consecutive sets in their matchups dating back to last fall, including five this season. Ferrer destroyed Del Potro 6-3, 6-3 in Miami and again 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 at Wimbledon.

Del Potro, however, is ending the year completely on top of his game. Prior to Paris, his recent results were as follows: semifinal in Cincinnati, quarterfinal at the U.S. Open, 1-0 in Davis Cup, and successive titles in Vienna and Basel (beat Roger Federer). The seventh-ranked Argentine got some much-needed rest by losing to Michael Llodra in the third round last week.

At 30 years old, Ferrer is wrapping up the best season of his career. He has won an outrageous 72 matches compared to only 14 losses. Since the U.S. Open semifinals, Ferrer has lost only one match by anything other than retirement. The world No. 5 is coming off back-to-back triumphs in Valencia and Paris.

That being said, current form will not be the key factor in this showdown. Ferrer has been surprisingly awesome on indoor hard courts, but the surface in London is faster than in Valencia or Paris. Del Potro will have everything in his tank for a worn-out opponent, so count on him turning the tide against Ferrer in straight sets.

I want to celebrate here a win in doubles.

Spain's Marc Lopez & Marcel Granollers defeted Bryans in doubles.

Augustina08 , 11/5/12 8:58 PM

saved MP at 8-9

RickyDimon , 11/6/12 2:25 AM

Wow, I didn't know Marc and Marcel could be so awesome! I hope they can be that good during the DC final.

Wow also about Ferrer, for his favorable H2H against Delpo. What's with Delpo, that he has such poor H2H vs all the top five guys? I'm looking forward to Ferrer vs Delpo match here and see who wins. Ferrer at 30, has already won Valencia and Paris, if he wins the WTF too, then he'll equal Fed's 2011 feat of winning three indoor titles in a row.

luckystar , 11/6/12 2:41 AM

Happy tidings indeed about Marc and word Rafa is being spoilt with good news! First Ferru snags his first Masters and now his fav dubs team beat the best dubs team in the world!

rafaisthebest , 11/6/12 6:19 AM

Lucky: Difference is last year Fed had a week off between Paris and London!

I know Daveed is indefatigable but to repeat his Bercy run would be a big ask. But who knows, if the adrenalin is still flowing after that win you never know.............

ed251137 , 11/6/12 9:17 AM

whoever saw ferrer tired tosses the first stone...

croc , 11/6/12 10:32 AM

Exactly Croc. Nevertheless it's tough for him to have drawn delPo for the first match.

Apart from the 2009 WTF for the most part he has performed well in previous appearances. It'll be interesting to see if the momentum and boost to his confidence can take him further this year.

ed251137 , 11/6/12 11:40 AM

Thru sheer dogged determination, I'm going for daveed to topple goliath in 3 gruelling sets.

alex , 11/6/12 4:52 PM

... after delpo takes the first set, and everyone's saying that daveed's recent exertions are now taking their toll ;-)

alex , 11/6/12 4:55 PM

Daveed draws the first blood. It's shaping up to be a great match.

ed251137 , 11/6/12 9:39 PM

Ferru won the firts set. He has been quick and has showen no signs of fatigue.

Augustina08 , 11/6/12 9:50 PM

Ferru lost the 2nd set. He seemed to be getting tired in the middle of the set.

Augustina08 , 11/6/12 10:46 PM

Delpo's woken up..............

rafaisthebest , 11/6/12 10:46 PM

break Ferru, Vamos!!

rafaisthebest , 11/6/12 10:52 PM

back and forth

RickyDimon , 11/6/12 10:58 PM

If Ferrer had played at this year's level throughout his career he would have won a Slam by now.

ed251137 , 11/6/12 11:02 PM

Ferru is energetic again!

Augustina08 , 11/6/12 11:03 PM

Looks like Daabeed is going to win this.

abhirf , 11/6/12 11:06 PM

It's delPo who is showing signs of fatigue.

ed251137 , 11/6/12 11:07 PM

I don't know about that, ed251137, Ferru's energy is undeniable but he lacks a killer shot and that to me is why he keeps coming up short in Slams.........

Because he lacks a killer shot, he finds it difficult to put away the big dogs and when he finds he is not hurting them, he despairs and fades away. This was aptly illustrated in the Barcelona final against Rafa.................

rafaisthebest , 11/6/12 11:08 PM

ed - no he wouldn't have. Even at his best he is not in the same class as the Big 3.

RickyDimon , 11/6/12 11:09 PM

rafaisthebest , 11/6/12 11:11 PM

back on serve

RickyDimon , 11/6/12 11:13 PM

I know that really................I am just getting carried away :-)

ed251137 , 11/6/12 11:14 PM

Ferru won!!!!!
Viva Ferru! Vivaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

Augustina08 , 11/6/12 11:25 PM

Ferrer keeps getting better and better and better!!!

If he can do it, why not Federer?

Conspirator , 11/6/12 11:26 PM

Well done Ferru, he sits nicely in second position in the group after this.

rafaisthebest , 11/6/12 11:27 PM

too tough, Ferrer

RickyDimon , 11/6/12 11:32 PM

Well done Ferru!
Delpo played well too. Just looks like he has found himself another nemesis in form of Daabeed.
Let's see if Daabeed can maintain his run of play against Fed. I hope he doesn't. But you never know. There's always a 1st time!

abhirf , 11/6/12 11:35 PM

well done again, daveed, toppled goliath in 3!

as predicted, ricky;)

even if i did get a bit carried away with the detail)

alex , 11/6/12 11:38 PM

Ferru is not going to beat Fed, just don't see that happening...........Fed is going to have a clean sweep in the group......

Ferru needs to concentrate on beating Tipsy in straight sets to be assured of going through........

rafaisthebest , 11/6/12 11:44 PM

so much for my prediction hot streak!

RickyDimon , 11/6/12 11:56 PM

Ricki underestimated the terrier. Alex was spot on - it was a gruelling match for both men but sheer determination to win prevailed.

ed251137 , 11/7/12 12:05 AM

I never bought the prediction that Ferrer wouldn't win a single game. He is on a roll and this win over Delpo doesn't surprise me. Ferrer never seems to get the respect he deserves.

I do not see Ferrer beating Fed. I can see Ferrer beating Tipsy. Ferrer may have a better than expected result.

Ferrer has always lacked that one great shot which can win him big victories. I give him credit for making the most of what he has, being as fit as possible and serving well and returning well. He is a great example of a player who isn't naturally talented or gifted, but who has gotten great results because of sheer determination and hard work.

Nativenewyorker , 11/7/12 1:26 AM

Sorry, I meant to say that I never bought the prediction that Ferrer wouldn't win a single match!

Nativenewyorker , 11/7/12 1:29 AM

The news that David has beaten Delpo and that Marc & Marcel have beaten the Bryans is great news. Well done to all. I cannot watch all the matches because they only seem to be showing one match a day on the BBC. Wish I could have seen these two. Very happy that they won - congrats and Vamos!
