• Berdych takes on Simon in Paris quarterfinals

    11/1/12 8:11 PM | Ricky Dimon
Berdych takes on Simon in Paris quarterfinals Tomas Berdych will battle Gilles Simon for a place in the semifinals on Friday in Paris. The winner will go up against either Janko Tipsarevic or Jerzy Janowicz.

Tomas Berdych and Gilles Simon will be squaring off for the seventh time in their careers and for the first time in three years when they collide in the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Masters on Friday afternoon.

Simon leads the head-to-head series 4-2, which is not a huge surprise since they have not faced each other since 2009. The Frenchman is 3-1 against Berdych on hard courts after prevailing twice during the fall of that season; 6-3, 6-4 in Shanghai and 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in Valencia.

Of course, that was when Simon surfaced in the Top 10 and became a World Tour Finals Contender. Three years later, he is still playing solid tennis but nowhere near at the top of his game. The world No. 20 is 42-24 for his 2012 campaign following Paris victories over Marcos Baghdatis and Victor Hanescu.

Berdych, on the other hand, is playing the best and most consistent tennis of his career. The sixth-ranked Czech is 59-19 for the season and headed to London for a third consecutive time. So far this week, Berdych has taken out Andreas Seppi and Kevin Anderson.

Despite playing at home in France, Simon is a considerable underdog in this one even at 100 percent. He got a walkover from Kei Nishikori on Thursday but admitted afterward that he was not feeling well and would have been in trouble had his opponent taken the court.

All signs point to a straight-set win for Berdych.

2009 Simon mode - refusing to miss and putting opponents to sleep, forcing them to hit unforced errors left and right.

Simon was good. Berdych was horrendous.

Perhaps that's why he was smiling so broadly at the net exchange. Not like him at all.

Jerzy has started nervously against Tipsy and is overhitting wildly.

Simon frustrates Berdych to no end when the ball keeps coming back at Berdych; so the counter puncher wins this time. Well if Llodra and Simon reach the final, then it'll be Simon's turn to get frustrated!

In the meantime, Janowicz is struggling against Tipsy. Tipsy seems well prepared for this Janowicz, I think Tipsy will win this match and ends Janowicz's fairytale run here. Let's see.

Tipsy loses the second set and now we have a true fight in the coming third set. This Janowicz, the way he's playing now, it's so exhausting, he's been running all over the place doing all the hustling. I really think he won't survive the tour week in week out having to play tiebreakers after tiebreakers. He reminds me of Raonic last year, and Raonic's body broke down with injuries when he started playing the full tour.

Looks like Tipsy has a sore throat.

I see that Simon beat Berdy. I guess that Berdy was looking ahead to London, like everyone else. However, I am happy for Simon. I have always enjoyed watching him. I really like his counterpunching and how he relies on finesse and precision rather than power.

I am going to have a good time watching the replays of these matches.
