• Querrey and Verdasco clash in Paris first round

    10/30/12 12:37 AM | Cheryl Murray
Querrey and Verdasco clash in Paris first round American Sam Querrey will battle Spaniard Fernando Verdasco to set up a second-round clash with world No. 2 Novak Djokovic.

This will be world No. 23 Sam Querrey against world No. 25 Fernando Verdasco. The two men met just a couple of weeks ago in Beijing, with Querrey winning in three sets. The American holds a 2-1 record over Verdasco, with his only loss coming in New Haven back in 2009.

Verdasco isn't in particularly good form right now. The Spaniard comes into Paris off a disappointing second-round showing in Valencia, where he lost to Marin Cilic 6-1, 6-4. Querrey didn't fare any better in Valencia. He also had a second-round exit, but he took a set from Nicolas Almagro before he did so.

Both men will likely prefer the surface in Paris, which is quicker than Valencia, but it is Querrey who has the bigger serve of the two men. The American is also enjoying a run of fairly good form that started with a semifinal showing in Winston-Salem this summer.

Prediction - Querrey for the win.
