Federer faces Mathieu in Basel semifinals Roger Federer is two wins away from his sixth Basel title as he takes the court again on Saturday. Standing in his way of the final is Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Roger Federer and Paul-Henri Mathieu will be squaring off for the sixth time in their careers when they collide in the semifinals of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Saturday.

Federer is cleanly sweeping the head-to-head series 5-0, including 2-0 on hard courts. They have not faced each other since the third round of the 2010 U.S. Open, a match that Federer dominated 6-4, 6-3, 6-3

The top-ranked Swiss wrapped up last year's campaign with consecutive titles in Basel, Paris, and at the World Tour Finals. He is looking to do the same in 2012 and off to a good start at his home event. Federer has dismissed Benjamin Becker, Thomaz Bellucci, and Benoit Paire to improve his season record to 67-9.

Mathieu, meanwhile, missed all of 2011 due to injury. In fact, he withdrew after a first-round victory in the 2010 Basel tournament then did not play another match until January of 2012.

Mathieu's comeback will take him into the Top 100 when the new rankings come out on Monday. The Frenchman is 13-15 at the ATP level this season and he is through to his second semifinal thanks to victories over Henri Laaksonen, Nikolay Davydenko, and Grigor Dimitrov.

"It’s nice seeing him playing so well," Federer said of Mathieu. "He’s a good player. He’s got one of the best backhands in the world. He’s got a good fighting spirit and he’s my age, so we’ve known each other for a really long time. I’m looking forward to the match."

The underdog will not be one to back down from Federer, but the numbers are obviously not in his favor. Mathieu has taken only a single set from the 17-time Grand Slam champion out of 17 contested. Count on Federer advancing to the title match in straights.

Mathieu has hit the resurgence stage. I've always felt that his DC problem killed his career.
