• Ferrer and Almagro clash in all-Spanish quarterfinal

    10/26/12 1:24 PM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrer and Almagro clash in all-Spanish quarterfinal Top seed David Ferrer will look to make it a dozen straight wins over Davis Cup teammate Nicolas Almagro in Friday's quarterfinal.

Nicolas Almagro will have to hold back a tide of momentum if he wants to get his first-ever win over countryman David Ferrer. The two men have met 11 other times in the past six years, including three times in 2012. Ferrer has won every encounter, with the world No. 5 racking up wins on both clay and hard courts.

Ferrer comes into Valencia off a bit of a rest. The top seed played a grueling post-US Open schedule, including an appearance in the Davis Cup semifinals. The tennis caught up with him, however. He was forced to retire in his match against Yen-Hsun Lu in Beijing and withdrew from the Shanghai Masters altogether.

Almagro had a semifinal showing in Stockholm, but otherwise, the Spaniard's fall season has been disappointing. He had a particularly bad showing in Shanghai, where he lost in the first round to Tommy Haas.

Prediction - Ferrer for his 12th win over Almagro.
