Federer takes on Paire in Basel quarterfinals Roger Federer will headline quarterfinal Friday in Basel as he goes up against Benoit Paire. The winner will face either Grigor Dimitrov or Paul-Henri Mathieu in the semis.

Roger Federer and Benoit Paire will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they clash in the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Friday.

Federer is three wins away from a sixth career title at his home event. Still, this week has not been smooth sailing for the world No. 1 so far. He beat Benjamin Becker 7-5, 6-3 in his opener then held off Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-5 on Wednesday. Federer is now 66-9 for the season.

Paire is through to his fifth quarterfinal of the season and first since 's-Hertogenbosch in June. The 46th-ranked Frenchman had lost nine of his last 12 matches prior to this week but he appears to be on the rise with victories over Moscow champion Andreas Seppi and qualifier Lukasz Kubot.

Of course, to say this is a step up in competition for Paire would be an understatement. He might hang around for a set or two if Federer does not raise his level, but the Swiss usually heats up as tournaments progress into their latter stages.

Federer in straight sets is the pick.
