• Dimitrov, Mathieu aim for Basel semifinals

Dimitrov, Mathieu aim for Basel semifinals Grigor Dimitrov will go up against Paul-Henri Mathieu in the Basel quarterfinals on Friday. At stake is a likely date with Roger Federer.

Grigor Dimitrov and Paul-Henri Matheiu will be squaring off for the first time in their careers when they do battle in the Basel quarterfinals on Friday evening.

Both men are rounding out solid but unspectacular seasons in fine form. Dimitrov's rise has come slower than some expected, but he is a solid 23-17 for his 2012 campaign. So far this week the 62nd-ranked Bulgarian has taken out Viktor Troicki and Julien Benneteau (the latter in three tiebreakers).

Mathieu is just 12-15 this year, but he made a comeback from injury and has managed to stay healthy while producing some decent tennis. The 30-year-old Frenchman will be back in the Top 100 following victories this week over Henri Laaksonen and Nikolay Davydenko.

Dimitrov may have youth and talent on his side, but Mathieu has plenty of experience in the latter stages of small ATP events. The world No. 101 is the more consistent of the two and he should score what would be a minor upset in three entertaining sets.
