  • Federer continues Basel campaign against Bellucci

    10/25/12 4:56 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer continues Basel campaign against Bellucci Roger Federer will headline the the third day of main-draw action on Wednesday in Basel. Standing in Federer's way of the quarterfinals is an in-form Thomaz Bellucci.

Roger Federer and Thomaz Bellucci will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers and for the second time this season when they clash in round two of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Wednesday. Federer won a surprisingly close encounter 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters.

Bellucci making this one similarly competitive is not out of the question because he is rounding into form late in the year. The Brazilian put himself in the thick of Australian Open seeding discussion by finishing runner-up to Andreas Seppi last week in Moscow. Bellucci is up to No. 34 in the world and he improved his 2012 record to 26-20 by overcoming Go Soeda 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in his Basel opener.

At the same time, though, this is not the time nor the place to be running into Federer. The world No. 1 is 65-9 for the season and he has captured this title five times. Federer kicked off his week with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over qualifier Benjamin Becker on Monday.

Despite a recent run of stellar play by Bellucci, the cards are not aligning favorably for him in this one. Federer will once again enjoy plenty of crowd support and the indoor setting will only help him. Count on the top seed cruising in straight sets.

Ricky, it did not happen that way though. There is something skewed in your predictions, NO?

my predictions were obviously the right ones.

Bellucci always gives Roger problems. Both he and Falla are somewhat of a threat to the Fed. The situation reminds me of Roger/Cnas battles.
