  • Isner, Goffin kick off Valencia Open

    10/22/12 3:54 AM | Cheryl Murray
Isner, Goffin kick off Valencia Open John Isner and David Goffin will take the court on Monday at the Valencia Open.

John Isner (5) vs. Fabio Fognini

World No. 11 John Isner will take on Italian clay-courter Fabio Fognini in his first-round match. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two men. Isner comes into Valencia in the midst of a mediocre fall season. He was part of the loss of the American Davis Cup team to the Spanish side. He also had a third-round showing a week ago in Shanghai, where he lost to world No. 41 Radek Stepanek.

Fognini is ranked 44th in the world. The Italian had a surprising run to the final in St. Petersburg, but since then he's suffered three consecutive first-round losses, including a loss to world No. 187 Donald Young last week in Vienna.

Prediction - With Fognini struggling with form right now, Isner should advance in straight sets.

    David Goffin vs. Pablo Andujar

David Goffin and Pablo Andujar have already met once this year on the clay courts of Barcelona. Andujar won that encounter in straight sets. They meet again in Andujar's home country on Monday.

Goffin is an inconsistent player. He had a shocking run through qualifying all the way through the round of 16 at the French Open, but he has also just suffered a first-round loss at the Mons Challenger event at the hands of Michael Llodra.

Andujar has had a horrid fall season. The Spaniard has suffered four straight first-round losses since his second-round showing at the US Open.

Prediction - With Goffin playing better tennis at the moment, the Belgian should have the edge in this match.

Big John for the win. Fognini is fun to watch though, but john's serve should get him the win.

Hard to pick against Andujar on home soil.

LOL, Ricky, I've been very busy and haven't had any time to watch matches. I thought I'd visit here to get caught up on what's happening in the tennis world.

Who won?

OK checked ATP site and I see Big John had to go 3 sets for the win. From the scoreline it looks as though it was a tight match.

Goffin demolished Andujar.

Isner-Fogni match was truly bizarre. I cant imagine it was high quality, altho someone on MTF claimed it was....

Ricky, thanks for the input. Hopefully, I can watch tomorrow coz there are some good matches scheduled.
