  • Federer opens in Basel against Chardy

    10/21/12 9:11 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer opens in Basel against Chardy Roger Federer will make his traditional Monday start to kick off the Swiss Indoors Basel. Up first for Federer, as he seeks a sixth title at the event, is Jeremy Chardy.

As usual, the Swiss Indoors Basel will kick off in style with defending champion Roger Federer headlining the action on Monday. Federer will contest his opener against Jeremy Chardy, whom he has never faced.

The world No. 1 is wrapping up a stellar 2012 campaign, albeit one that may not be quite good enough to hold off Novak Djokovic at the top of the rankings. Federer owns a 64-9 record following a semifinal loss to Andy Murray at the Shanghai Rolex Masters earlier this month. A limited fall schedule also saw him dominate two Davis Cup singles rubbers against the Netherlands.

At No. 32 in the world (as of Sunday), Chardy is on the verge of a new career-high ranking and he is in position to be seeded for the Australian Open. The Frenchman's season has been highlighted by a stellar hard-court summer, during which he has third-round showings in Toronto and at the U.S. Open in addition to a quarterfinal in Cincinnati (where he upset Andy Murray).

However, Chardy lost in the Tokyo second round and did not put up much of a fight against Alexandr Dolgopolov in his Shanghai opener.

The underdog will have to get back on track in a hurry to have any chance against Federer. Needless to say, this is not the time nor the place to be facing the top-seeded Swiss. Federer is 43-7 lifetime in Basel and has won it five times, including a current streak of two in a row. Count on Federer treating the home crowd to a straight-set victory.

Chardy WDed when he saw he had to play Federer

Fed now playing Becker

should be an even easier straight-set win

ha ha, Chardy took the easiest way out. Can't blame the guy though. Who would want to play Fed in a first match in front of his home crowd?
