  • Seppi, Karlovic take the court for Moscow semifinals

    10/20/12 1:02 AM | Ricky Dimon
Seppi, Karlovic take the court for Moscow semifinals Andreas Seppi and Ivo Karlovic are bidding for spots in the Moscow title match on Saturday. They will go up against Malek Jaziri and Thomaz Bellucci, respectively.

Malek Jaziri vs. (2) Andreas Seppi

Jaziri and Seppi will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers (first time at the ATP level) when they collide in the Kremlin Cup semifinals on Saturday. Their only previous encounter came at last fall's Mons Challenger, with Seppi dominating 6-1, 6-1. Jaziri has spent most of his career at that level, but he is through to his first ATP semifinal following victories over Rajeev Ram, Viktor Troicki, and Lukas Rosol.

Seppi, on the other hand, is in good shape to capture his third career ATP title and second of the season. The Italian is up to No. 25 in the world and poised to eclipse his career-high ranking of 24th. So far in Moscow he has taken out Igor Sijsling and Tatsuma Ito in routine fashion. Based on current form and experience, Seppi in straight sets is the pick.

Ivo Karlovic vs. (4) Thomaz Bellucci

Karlovic and Bellucci will be squaring off for the third time in their careers and for the first time in four years when they meet on Saturday. Both of their previous matchups came on hard courts and both went Karlovic's way; 6-3, 6-4 at the 2008 Cincinnati Masters and 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-7(6), 7-6(4) later that season in a Davis Cup playoff tie.

Neither man is wrapping up a memorable 2012 campaign. Karlovic, at 33 years old, has evened his record for the year at 16-16 thanks to wins this week over Simone Bolelli, Alex Bogomolov, and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. Belucci is a modest 24-19, but his Moscow showing should have him back in the Top 40 of the world. The fourth-seeded Brazilian booked his spot in the semis by defeating Flavio Cipolla and Jerzy Janowicz. Look for Karlovic to get the job done in two tight sets.
