  • Berdych, Tsonga in action on quarterfinal day at Stockholm Open

    10/19/12 4:33 AM | Cheryl Murray
Berdych, Tsonga in action on quarterfinal day at Stockholm Open Tomas Berdych and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the top two seeds in the tournament, will take the court on Friday in Stockholm.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (1) vs. Sergiy Stakhovsky

The Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky has lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga once a year for the past three years, including a meeting this year in Winston-Salem. Tsonga, who is vying for a slot at the World Tour Finals, will look for his fourth win over Stakhovsky.

Tsonga, who is ranked No. 7 in the world, has had a great run of late. The Frenchman captured the title in Metz, got to the final in Beijing and made the quarters in Shanghai.

Stakhovsky is ranked 92 in the world. The Ukrainian was not able to successfully qualify in Shanghai; the last match he won was back in St. Petersburg.

Prediction - Tsonga in straight sets.

Tomas Berdych (2) vs. Mikhail Youzhny (6)

This could be one of the more interesting quarterfinal matches on Friday. No. 2 seed Tomas Berdych and No. 6 Mikhail Youzhny have met 11 times previously. Youzhny holds a scant 6-5 edge, with their last meeting at the 2010 French Open going to Berdych.

Berdych is playing well. He made the semifinals in Shanghai and quarters in Tokyo. Youzhny, conversely, had a horrid tournament in Shanghai. He lost in the first round to Serbia's Viktor Troicki, but he got to the semis in St. Petersburg.

This one could be a real battle. Youzhny will be better rested, but Berdych is in better form.

    Prediction - Berdych in 3.
