  • Murray meets Dolgopolov at Shanghai Masters

    10/10/12 8:15 PM | Ricky Dimon
Murray meets Dolgopolov at Shanghai Masters It is the third round in Shanghai and Andy Murray still hasn't played a match. After getting a first-round bye and a walkover from Florian Mayer, Murray will face Alexandr Dolgopolov on Thursday.

Andy Murray and Alexandr Dolgopolov will be going head-to-head for the fourth time in their careers when they square off in the third round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Thursday evening.

Murray has won all three of their previous meetings, including two on hard courts. The Scot prevailed 7-5, 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3 in the 2011 Australian Open quarterfinals before dominating 6-1, 6-3 in this year's Brisbane title match.

Interestingly, Murray has not played a single match this week. The two-time defending champion earned a first-round bye as the No. 3 seed then got a walkover past Florian Mayer (rib) on Wednesday. Murray, looking to bounce back from a close loss to Milos Raonic in the Tokyo quarterfinals, is 50-12 for the season.

Dolgopolov, on the other hand, already has a pair of victories under his belt. The 20th-ranked Ukrainian crushed Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-2 then rolled over No. 15 seed Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-4. Dolgopolov is now a respectable 30-21 for his 2012 campaign.

Murray may be a little bit rusty in his first match of the tournament, but he should be well-rested and feeling especially good having won this event twice. Count on the world No. 3 advancing to the quarters in straight sets.

Just read muzz had bad night after food poisoning:-( We'll soon see what he's like - it always shows with our muzz ...

alex , 10/11/12 11:59 AM

Health matters aside, muzz's first match, so hope he can hit the ground running. Wouldn't surprise me if muzz really struggles in first set. Dolly Mixtures a real bag of tricks, and springy as Tigger.

alex , 10/11/12 12:03 PM

muzz takes 1st set 6-2. Nothing flashy, just solid tennis, muzz doing what he has to and turning the screws whrn necessary.

he's not looking well though, coughing and spluttering between each point, hope it doesn't get any worse.

alex , 10/11/12 12:41 PM

dolly gets broken early in set 2 thanks to 2 dfs and his usual sprinkling of ufes.

muzz decides to get grumpy next game, starts berating himself after 1st point, goes on to get broken straight back, and batters his racquet repeatedly on the ground to ensure it's properly destroyed.

then muzz breaks straight back in the next game again.

that's our muzz.

alex , 10/11/12 12:55 PM

muzz breaks for 5-2 in set 2, this time with a nice forehand pass, rather than another dolly ufe.

poor dolly just can't do anything about it. needs help. they're saying his dsd's gonna come back and voach him. hr nreds something cos he dorsn't look like #20.

muzz serves out 6-2, 6-2.

alex , 10/11/12 1:06 PM

Wow :)
Let's Go Andy. Let's Go!

Why has Murray started smashing his racquet? He didn't even do that pre-Lendl.

nadline , 10/11/12 2:06 PM

alex, what have you been drinking? "his dsd's gonna come back and voach him. hr nreds something cos he dorsn't look like #20."

I'm disappointed with the way Dolgo played. I was expecting a fun match between the two, both can be such good shotmakers, too bad it didn't turn out that way. Congrats to Murray anyway; it seems that he's physically not in tip top condition, coughing during the match.

luckystar , 10/11/12 2:36 PM

nadline, better than smashing himself, which he used to do.
Plenty of wriggle room till he gets to Baggy's level, anyway...;)

deuce , 10/11/12 3:14 PM

nadline - lol. from stupid astroid. sober as a fudge, honest;)

I think the tennis channel is replaying this match now. But I came on here to see the score and won't bother watching. It's too bad that Murray seems to be under the weather. I don't know what's happened to Dolgo, but he hasn't done anything in a while. He is a player who can be so interesting to watch, but lately he hasn't been bringing it.

Maybe I will watch some of it to see how Andy looks. Hopefully he will feel better for his next match.
