  • Raonic, Berdych take the court in Shanghai

    10/9/12 5:58 PM | Ricky Dimon
Raonic, Berdych take the court in Shanghai Milos Raonic and Tomas Berdych will bid for spots in the Shanghai third round on Wednesday. They are going up against Marcos Baghdatis and Andreas Seppi, respectively.

Marcos Baghdatis vs. (12) Milos Raonic

Baghdatis and Raonic will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers when they do battle in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday afternoon. Raonic won both of their previous encounters 6-4 in the third; 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 6-4 last fall in Stockholm and 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-4 this summer in Cincinnati.

Both players are completely on top of their games right now. Raonic finished runner-up last weekend in Tokyo then beat Marinko Matosevic in straight sets on Tuesday to improve his season record to 44-17. Baghdatis reached the Tokyo semifinals before losing to eventual champion Kei Nishikori. The 46th-ranked Cypriot kicked off his Shanghai campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 blowout of Fabio Fognini. Raonic in another three-setter is the pick.

Andreas Seppi vs. (4) Tomas Berdych

Familiar foes Seppi and Berdych will be meeting for the sixth time in their careers on Wednesday afternoon in Shanghai. Berdych leads the head-to-head series 3-2, including 2-1 on hard courts. They have faced each other only once since splitting a pair of hard-court encounters in the summer of 2008; Berdych prevailed 6-3, 6-4 early this season on the indoor hard courts of Rotterdam.

The seventh-ranked Czech, who earned a first-round bye as the No. 4 seed in Shanghai, is looking to bounce back from a Tokyo quarterfinal loss to Nishikori. Berdych, a U.S. Open semifinalist, is still 50-18 for the year and well on his way to the World Tour Finals. Seppi is a stellar 33-24 after dismissing Michael Berrer 6-2, 7-6(5) on Monday. The 26th-ranked Italian is rarely an easy out, but look for Berdych to advance in straight sets.
