• Paire, Petzschner clash at Shanghai Masters

    10/8/12 1:25 AM | Ricky Dimon
Paire, Petzschner clash at Shanghai Masters Benoit Paire and Philipp Petzschner will face each other during the first full day of main-draw action on Monday in Shanghai. Alexandr Dolgopolov and Jeremy Chardy are also looking for a place in the second round.

Benoit Paire vs. (Q) Philipp Petzschner

Paire and Petzschner will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they collide in round one of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Monday. Neither man is in particularly good form and both are looking to bounce back from early exits in Tokyo. Petzschner lost in qualifying and Paire was dealt a tough draw, losing his opener to Tomas Berdych.

On paper, Paire is a considerable favorite. The 23-year-old Frenchman is still a decent 22-22 at the ATP level this season despite recent struggles and he registers at 52nd in the world. Petzschner is toiling outside the Top 100 somewhat due to injury but mostly because of poor play. The German has not won back-to-back matches since a run to the 's-Hertogenbosch final on grass. Count on some great shot-making and several bizarre moments, with a slight edge going to Paire.

    Alexandr Dolgopolov vs. Jeremy Chardy

Dolgopolov and Chardy will be facing each other for the third time on Monday in Shanghai. Chardy has won both of their previous encounters, which were contested on hard courts; 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 two years ago at this event and 6-3, 7-6(6) last fall in Moscow.

Dolgopolov beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez last week in Beijing then lost to Jurgen Melzer. The 20th-ranked Ukrainian 28-21 for the year. Chardy heated up during the U.S. Open Series and has climbed to No. 31 in the world for his efforts. The Frenchman has not played since reaching the third round in Flushing Meadows. This could go either way, but Chardy in three sets is the pick.
