  • Djokovic battles Melzer in Beijing quarterfinals

    10/4/12 6:45 PM | Ricky Dimon
Djokovic battles Melzer in Beijing quarterfinals Novak Djokovic will be back in action on Friday in Beijing against Jurgen Melzer. The winner will move on to a semifinal encounter with either Florian Mayer or Ze Zhang.

Novak Djokovic and Jurgen Melzer will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers when they clash in the quarterfinals of the China Open on Friday.

Djokovic leads the head-to-head series 2-1, including 1-0 on hard courts. The Serb survived a three-setter in the 2006 Metz final and dominated a 2009 Halle encounter, but their most memorable meeting came at the 2010 French Open. That's where Melzer came back from two sets down to stun Djokovic 3-6, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(3), 6-4 and book a surprising semifinal spot.

This is not the same Melzer, however, as the Austrian is starting to slow down at 31 years old. Until this week, he had not won back-to-back matches since taking the Memphis title back in February. Melzer opened with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(3) victory over Pablo Andujar before ousting Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-6(9), 2-6, 6-1. The world No. 37 is now 17-20 for the season.

Djokovic struggled in his first-round Beijing match but managed to hold off Michael Berrer 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-2. The No. 1 seed picked up the pace on Wednesday with a 6-1, 6-3 destruction of Carlos Berlocq. Djokovic, who is seeking a fourth consecutive appearance in a final dating back to Toronto, is 62-11 for his 2012 campaign.

It has been a productive week for the recently-married Melzer, but the end is likely at hand. He is coming off a pair of tough three-setters and his opponent began to find the range in round two. Count on Djokovic exacting a measure of revenge and cruising in straight sets.
