• Ferrer and Tsonga begin China Open bids

Ferrer and Tsonga begin China Open bids No. 2 seed David Ferrer and No. 3 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will take the court in an action-packed day in Beijing.

David Ferrer (2) vs. Yen-Hsun Lu

Spaniard David Ferrer, who comes into Beijing fresh off a quarterfinal showing in Kuala Lumpur, will take on Taipei native Yen-Hsun Lu in his first-round match.

Lu is ranked 64th in the world, but he's been struggling of late, even on the Challenger circuit. He won a single match in Cincinnati and another in Winston Salem, but otherwise his summer was something of a disappointment.

By contrast, Ferrer had a fantastic summer, including crucial singles victories in the Davis Cup semifinal against the United States and a semifinal showing at the US Open.

Ferrer might be experiencing fatigue from playing so much, but he should get past Lu in straight sets.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (3) vs. Denis Istomin

Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin has not had success against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Frenchman has won all three of their encounters, including a four-set clash in the first round of the Australian Open this year.

Istomin would ordinarily be a tricky first-round opponent, but Tsonga is enjoying good form at the moment. The Frenchman will be the overwhelming favorite.

Prediction - Tsonga in straight sets.

Looks like Ferrer retired against Lu. Lu was leading 5-4 in the first set.
