  • Dolgopolov takes on Garcia-Lopez at China Open

    10/1/12 4:07 AM | Ricky Dimon
Dolgopolov takes on Garcia-Lopez at China Open Alexandr Dolgopolov will contest his Beijing opener against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Monday. Florian Mayer and Fabio Fognini are also looking for a place in the second round.

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez vs. (6) Alexandr Dolgopolov

Garcia-Lopez and Dolgopolov will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they do battle in round one of the China Open on Monday. Dolgopolov still registers at a solid 20th in the world, but he is a mediocre 27-20 this season and has not been playing well since capturing the Washington, D.C. title. The Ukrainian is coming of an opening loss in Kuala Lumpur to Alejandro Falla.

The story is similar for Garcia-Lopez, who is a decent 20-21 for the year but has not done much of late aside from a stunner over Juan Monaco at the U.S. Open. Although he is from Spain, Garcia-Lopez actually does strong work on hard courts (2010 Bangkok champion, for example). However, the world No. 63 got blown out by Bernard Tomic 6-0, 6-2 last week in the Bangkok first round. Dolgopolov in three sets is the pick.

    Florian Mayer vs. Fabio Fognini

Fognini and Mayer will be squaring off for the second time in their careers on Monday in Beijing. Mayer has won both of their previous encounters; 6-0, 6-2 last season in Shanghai and 7-5, 6-2 this summer on the hard courts of Cincinnati.

The 29th-ranked German has slumped recently, with two wins in his last eight matches at ATP tournaments. Fognini is an underrated hard-court player. He advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open and recently finished runner-up on the indoor hard courts of St. Petersburg. The 47th-ranked Italian has the edge in current form, but look for Mayer to prevail in three based on head-to-head history.
