  • Tsonga takes on Seppi for Moselle Open title

    9/23/12 3:08 AM | Ricky Dimon
Tsonga takes on Seppi for Moselle Open title Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is one step away from successfully defending his Metz title. Standing in his way on Sunday is Andreas Seppi.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andreas Seppi will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers when they meet in the Moselle Open final on Sunday afternoon.

Tsonga leads the head-to-head series 2-1 and all three previous encounters have been contested on hard courts. A 2008 victory for Seppi was followed by a pair of straight-set wins by Tsonga in 2011; 6-3, 7-6(1), 7-6(5) at the Australian Open and 6-3, 6-4 in Paris.

Both players are now in the midst of stellar seasons. Tsonga is 44-17 for his 2012 campaign and likely on his way to another appearance in the World Tour Finals. So far in Metz, the seventh-ranked Frenchman has taken out Clement Reix, Jesse Levine, and Nikolay Davydenko.

Seppi is on the brink of a career-high ranking, coming in four places back at No. 28 in the world. The fifth-seeded Italian dismissed Ivan Dodig, Vincent Millot, and Florian Mayer before overcoming Gael Monfils in a tough three-setter on Saturday.

"It's always been tough against Andreas," Tsonga assured. "It will be a difficult match. He is very solid and playing very well lately so I will prepare myself for a big fight."

Seppi's win over Monfils should give him confidence, but Tsonga is a huge favorite in this one. The home hope is the defending champion and his game is once again working extremely well on indoor hard courts. Look for Tsonga to take the title in straight sets.
