  • Paire gets another shot at Kohlschreiber

    9/19/12 8:15 PM | Ricky Dimon
Paire gets another shot at Kohlschreiber Three weeks after colliding in a U.S. Open thriller, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Benoit Paire are going head-to-head again on Thursday. A spot in the Metz quarterfinals is at stake.

Philipp Kohlschreiber and Benoit Paire will be squaring off for the second time in their careers and for the second time in three weeks when they clash during round-two action at the Moselle Open on Thursday.

They faced each other just recently in the second round of the U.S. Open, where Kohlschreiber survived an absolute roller-coaster 6-7(4), 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(4). Paire recovered from a break in the final set, served for the match at 6-5, then lost it with two double-faults in the tiebreaker--including one at 4-6.

Kohlschreiber ended up reaching the fourth round, outlasting John Isner in another five-setter (ending at 2:26 in the morning) before going down to Janko Tipsarevic. For his efforts, the German is up to No. 18 in the world--two spots off his career-high. Kohlschreiber, who is 40-20 for the season, earned a first-round bye in Metz as the No. 2 seed.

Paire set up the rematch by rolling over Xavier Malisse 6-1, 6-4 on Tuesday. The 51st-ranked Frenchman owns 22 of his 27 career ATP match wins in what has been a breakout 2012 campaign.

Although Paire slumped during the hard-court summer (1-4 record), he should take heart from his competitive showing against Kohlschreiber in New York and from his performance against Malisse. Playing at home in France and on indoor hard courts will also help Paire, who has a good chance of getting revenge in three tight sets.
