  • Tsonga begins in Metz, Mayer takes on Blake

    9/18/12 6:58 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tsonga begins in Metz, Mayer takes on Blake Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will contest his Metz opener on Wednesday against qualifier Clement Reix. Florian Mayer and James Blake are also looking for a place in the quarterfinals.

    (1) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. (Q) Clement Reix

Tsonga is looking to bounce back from a shocking second-round U.S. Open loss to Martin Klizan as he headlines the Moselle Open with top seeding. The seventh-ranked Frenchman has not been in peak form since a semifinal showing at Wimbledon, but he is still an impressive 41-17 for his 2012 campaign. Tsonga captured the Metz title last year in his first appearance at the event since 2007.

Up first for Tsonga on Wednesday is Reix, who is already in the midst of his best week on the ATP Tour. The 28-year-old French journeyman qualified for the main draw then picked up the first ATP-level win of his career on Tuesday when he upset compatriot Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. This has been a good showing from Reix, but it is surely coming to an end at Tsonga's hands in two quick sets.

James Blake vs. (4) Florian Mayer

Mayer and Blake will be going head-to-head for the fourth time in their careers when they do battle in the Metz second round on Wednesday afternoon. Blake has won all three of their previous encounters (all on hard courts and most recently at the 2009 Beijing event) while dropping only a single set in the process.

The 32-year-old American started this season slow but rounded into form on U.S. hard courts. Blake played well again on Monday, ousting French wild card Albano Olivetti 6-2, 7-6(4). Mayer still registers at a solid 25th in the world, but he is a mere 18-21 for his 2012 campaign. The German earned two Davis Cup victories last weekend against Australia, but he will be making a quick transition from clay to indoor hard courts. Blake in three sets is the pick.
