  • Mayer, Tomic clash in crucial Davis Cup rubber

    9/15/12 6:33 PM | Ricky Dimon
Mayer, Tomic clash in crucial Davis Cup rubber Florian Mayer hopes to keep host Germany alive during Sunday's Davis Cup action in Hamburg. Bernard Tomic, on the other hand, is looking to put Australia in the 2013 World Group.

Florian Mayer and Bernard Tomic will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they contest the fourth Davis Cup rubber between Germany and Australia on Sunday afternoon in Hamburg. Mayer dominated their only previous meeting 6-2, 6-2 last year in Brisbane.

This time around it is not Tomic, but Mayer who has home-court advantage. That can only help the world No. 25, who would be favored in this matchup even in a neutral setting. Mayer is a disappointing 17-21 for the season, but he scored an impressive 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 win over Lleyton Hewitt on Friday.

Tomic also played well on the first day of action, briefly putting Australia out front with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over Cedrik-Marcel Stebe. Still, the 19-year-old has been in lackluster form of late. He won a mere four matches in between the French Open and this week, and his lone U.S. Open win was followed by an awful performance against Andy Roddick.

This is not good matchup for Tomic, who prefers to use his funky style against bigger, less consistent hitters. Mayer, on the other can, can slice and dice with his opponent all day. Look for the German to treat his home fans to a four-set triumph.

Should Mayer prevail, it would set the stage for an all-important fifth rubber between Stebe and Hewitt.
