  • Federer back in action after Davis Cup doubles loss

    9/15/12 6:48 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer back in action after Davis Cup doubles loss Roger Federer has another chance to finish Switzerland's Davis Cup tie against the Netherlands on Sunday. Standing in the Swiss team's way of the 2013 World Group is Robin Haase.

Roger Federer could not close out Switzerland's Davis Cup playoff tie against the Netherlands on Saturday, as he and partner Stanislas Wawrinka went down to Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Roger 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. However, the Swiss still lead 2-1 and Federer has another opportunity to seal the deal on Sunday afternoon against Haase.

Federer kicked off the tie on Friday with a routine 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Thiemo De Bakker. The world No. 1 was broken twice and did not turn in a vintage performance, but he did not have not have to get out of first gear and was never seriously troubled. Federer, only a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Open, is now 60-8 for his 2012 campaign.

For the Netherlands, the biggest match of the week was Haase vs. Wawrinka because they absolutely had to have it. Haase put up a decent fight but fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) in the second rubber. The 50th-ranked Dutchman 19-23 at the ATP level this season, which includes a title on the clay courts of Kitzbuhel.

Haase at least has home court advantage in Amsterdam for this one, and clay is Federer's least favorite surface. Still, the underdog's chances are slim to none. Count on Federer winning their first-ever meeting after three relatively competitive sets.
