Hewitt takes on Mayer in Davis Cup action Lleyton Hewitt will contest his 33rd Davis Cup tie this weekend, a record for Australia. He is set for a meeting with Florian Mayer in Friday's second tie on the clay courts of Germany.

Lleyton Hewitt and Florian Mayer will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they contest the second Davis Cup rubber between Australia and Germany on Friday afternoon in Hamburg. Hewitt won their only previous encounter 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 six years ago on the hard courts of Las Vegas.

Mayer is a disappointing 16-21 for the season, but he is still ranked 25th in the world thanks to a considerable number of points from last fall's Asian swing. The German reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals a few months ago, but he compiled an awful 1-3 record on American hard courts.

Hewitt did not play a single tournament in between the Australian and French Opens due to more injury problems, but he is finally armed with a clean bill of health (relatively speaking). The 31-year-old Aussie has enjoyed a nice summer that included a runner-up in Newport and a recent third-round showing at the U.S. Open (lost to David Ferrer).

This is the 33rd Davis Cup tie of Hewitt's career, surpassing Australian doubles legend Todd Woodbridge for the country's all-time record. It should get off to a good start for Hewitt, at least based on current form. Look for the visitor to go into Hamburg and beat Mayer in four sets.
