• Ferrer takes on Gasquet in U.S. Open fourth round

    9/4/12 7:04 AM | Ricky Dimon
Ferrer takes on Gasquet in U.S. Open fourth round With John Isner gone, David Ferrer is a considerable favorite to reach the U.S. Open semifinals out of his section. Ferrer will have to get past Richard Gasquet on Tuesday in order to get one step closer.

David Ferrer and Richard Gasquet will be squaring off for the ninth time in their careers when they clash in round four of the U.S. Open on Tuesday afternoon.

Ferrer is dominating the head-to-head series 7-1, including 6-0 on hard courts. Gasquet's lone victory came back in 2008, and Ferrer is now on a four-match streak. They have faced each other twice this season, with the Spaniard scoring a 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 Aussie Open blowout before cruising 7-6(4), 6-3 on the clay courts of Rome.

But this could be a different Gasquet on the other side of the set. New York's No. 13 seed enjoyed his best result of the year in Toronto (runner-up to Novak Djokovic) and his record has soared to 33-17 thanks to a trio of convincing wins. Gasquet has dropped only one set (his first of the tournament) in victories over Albert Montanes, Bradley Klahn, and Steve Johnson.

Ferrer, as usual, has been a consistent force throughout the season. The world No. 5 is 55-11 for his 2012 campaign, which includes U.S. Open dismissals of Kevin Anderson, Igor Sijsling, and 2001 champion Lleyton Hewitt.

Interestingly, not a single one of the meetings between Ferrer and Gasquet has exceeded straight sets. With the Frenchman in fine form, this should be the most competitive of them all. But past history will be hard for the underdog to ignore, so Ferrer in four sets is the pick.

Going on a limb and calling the upset by Wawrinka over Djoker to make an easy path to the final for Del Potro vs Roger (at the other end to beat Murray); I think Murray to meet Gasquet not Ferrer; also on another note I think Ivanovic to beat S/rena at the same time (both favourites for tournament out today/tomorrow)

Ferrer and Djoker will cruise

Go Ferrer the Spaniard #1.... The best tennis player Spain has produced !!! :D

tomnjerry2 , 9/4/12 9:09 PM

Even when Rafa is not playing, Fedfans cannot "let go", he torments them so.......

Rich material for a follow up book on Rafa, per chance?

rafaisthebest , 9/4/12 10:07 PM

It's because they are obsessed with him. Despite their protestations to the contrary, they can't get enough of Rafa!

Nativenewyorker , 9/4/12 10:16 PM

^^^^so true. Rafa's extended absence has confirmed what all HONEST Rafans have long acknowledged: Rafa is the life and soul of the ATP. I say honest in caps because there are a lot of self- proclaimed haters who are actually closet Rafans........

rafaisthebest , 9/4/12 10:26 PM

what does Rafa's extended absence have anything to do with confirmation that he is the life and soul of the ATP?

Rafa's extended absence confirms that he has terrible knees. that's all.

So speaketh the voice of wisdom.Well said.

Ricky, you are fantabulous!!!!!!!

scoretracker , 9/4/12 11:29 PM

RITB at 10.07pm.

So true, the Fed fans can't simply concentrate on cheering for Fed or concentrate on watching the tennis matches, without remembering Rafa and having a dig at him. Tomnjerry's post at 9.09pm confirms this (obviously Spanish #1 has to be Rafa instead of Ferrer, anyone who's not blind can see that).

luckystar , 9/5/12 3:26 AM

Well played Ferrer the #1 Spaniard !!! Congrats.. !! :D

LOL i did not even take the name ppl r so rubbed eh !!! rofl rofl such a joy reading sourgrapes !!! PHEW

Ricky is awesomest !!! =D

tomnjerry2 , 9/5/12 7:24 AM

The anti-Rafa bile keeps dripping. Even Ricky the self-confessed Rafan baited chimes in bitterly. Looking to generate some traffic, hey Ricky with a barbed anti-Rafa comment?

Yes lucky, there is a tournament going on but they are here talking about ............Rafa!

rafaisthebest , 9/5/12 7:56 AM

Lucky @3:26am, they are closet Rafans and as such live with guilt, shame. It's the latter 2 emotions that account for the anger, bilious ness towards Rafa and his honest fans.

Please let's not be upset at them, they need help.

rafaisthebest , 9/5/12 8:08 AM

Hey Ricky, thank you for pointing out the facts regarding Rafa's knees. I stand corrected.

I look forward to your next post where you correct tomnjerry2 about who the #1 Spanish player is. You being the TT fact checker and all.

Thank you.

rafaisthebest , 9/5/12 8:22 AM

LOL tomnjerry2. Can't you see past your noses? He clearly doesn't even care about Rafa! Just having fun messing with you...doing a good job too LOL

ts38 , 9/5/12 8:25 AM

So what are you doing here running off your mouth! You just did it on another topic thread? What's wrong? Is your life that dull! You need to pass your time away cheering on the fools hating on Rafa?

You must have a sad and lonely life. Too bad. What a waste!

Nativenewyorker , 9/5/12 8:28 AM

Ts38 @8:25am. Thank you for confirming who the real batters are on this site.

Have a nice day.

rafaisthebest , 9/5/12 8:31 AM

^^^should read "real baiters"

I wish Apple would remove this Ipad spell check nonsense.....

rafaisthebest , 9/5/12 8:35 AM

Hook line and sinker! Nadal fans NEVER bait Federer fans. And apparently taking 5 minutes to read 10 comments that made me laugh now translates into a sad and lonely life. What does that make you then?

ts38 , 9/5/12 8:42 AM

Poor USO2012, turning out to be silly season this........

rafaisthebest , 9/5/12 8:49 AM

ts38... the hypocrites do cheer #pirator for his demeanind # tags against Fed.LOL

The #1 Spaniard (Davy Ferrer) has done tremendous job reaching QF of the USO.. Spain aint missing their 2nd best player with Ferrer being their best bet.

tomnjerry2 , 9/5/12 8:53 AM

^^^^vamos syndrome!!!!
