  • Roddick and Del Potro in third round action

    9/2/12 4:40 AM | Cheryl Murray
Roddick and Del Potro in third round action Crowd favorite Andy Roddick will take the court on Sunday, as the American continues a run at his last tournament before his retirement from tennis.

    Andy Roddick vs. Fabio Fognini

This will be the second meeting in just a few months for Andy Roddick and Italy's Fabio Fognini. The two men met on the grass courts of Eastbourne in the quarterfinals. The Italian took the middle set in that match, but Roddick eventually prevailed in 3 sets.

Roddick will be looking to extend his tennis career by a few more days, as the world No. 22 has announced that this will be his last tournament. Fognini is a good clay courter, but against Roddick at home on the world's biggest tennis stage, the Italian isn't likely to have enough to send Roddick into retirement.

Prediction - The American in straight sets.

Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Leonardo Mayer

World No. 8 Juan Martin Del Potro will take on countryman Leonardo Mayer as the two men fight for a fourth round spot. Del Potro was the 2009 champion at the US Open and while he lacks some of the pace he had back when he won the title, the Argentine is playing good tennis at the moment.

The one question mark for Del Potro is his left wrist, which he injured during the Cincinnati Masters. So far though, he's manged the pain well enough to advance.

Mayer is ranked No. 63 in the world. He hasn't had a great hard court season so far, with single wins in Los Angeles and Washington to show for his efforts this summer.

Prediction - Del Potro should have no difficulty getting past his compatriot.
