  • Defending champ Djokovic begins US Open bid against Lorenzi

    8/28/12 5:04 PM | Cheryl Murray
Defending champ Djokovic begins US Open bid against Lorenzi Novak Djokovic will begin his 2012 US Open campaign under the lights on Tuesday night against Italian Paolo Lorenzi.

Novak Djokovic will kick off his US Open against Paolo Lorenzi, a man he has never lost a set to. Lorenzi is ranked 69th in the world, and the Italian gathers the vast majority of his rankings points from play on clay courts. He won a Challenger event in Italy coming into this week, but that was also a clay-court event.

Djokovic hasn't had the banner year that he had in 2011, but the Serb owns the title in Toronto and he won the Australian Open to kick off the season.

This match should result in a routine victory for the second seed. Djokovic is one of the most consistent players on tour with fierce groundstrokes and a superb return game. Expect a speedy win for the world No. 2.
