  • Federer, Tomic tilt on tap at Western & Southern Open

Federer, Tomic tilt on tap at Western & Southern Open Roger Federer returns to the court on Thursday in Cincinnati. A place in the quarterfinals will be on the line when he goes up against Bernard Tomic.

Roger Federer and Bernard Tomic will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers when they collide in round three of the Western & Southern Open on Thursday afternoon.

Federer has emerged victorious in both of their previous encounters; one competitive and the other a blowout. After a 6-2, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 grass-court decision last year in Davis Cup play, Federer rolled over Tomic 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in round four of this January's Australian Open.

That was part of a stellar beginning of 2012 for Tomic, but a summer slump has sent the 19-year-old Aussie tumbling down the rankings. He ended a seven-match losing streak in Toronto and so far in Cincinnati he has ousted both Ryan Harrison and Brian Baker in straight sets. Tomic is now 22-20 for the season.

"He's gone through a rough patch; his results haven't been all that good," Federer noted. "I don't know if that makes him more dangerous here.... He likes the big stage. He likes playing against the best players."

Tomic's next opponent, of course, is in that category. Federer captured his seventh Wimbledon title earlier this summer then finished runner-up to Andy Murray at the Olympics. The top-ranked Swiss is well-rested having skipped Toronto last week and it paid off in the form of a 6-3, 6-2 destruction of Alex Bogomolov on Wednesday night.

Tomic is the kind of player who makes opponents beat themselves, and Federer is showing no signs of doing that at the moment. Count on the four-time champion booking a quarterfinal spot in straight sets.

Too bad for Tomic, he is a talented player but I always get the impression he is lazy when I watch him play (which is seldom). Roger played well first round. Go Rog Go! :)

hey sky, expect a big upset by Tomic either in 2 or 3 today (depending on how the first set goes if it goes to Tomic, this could occur in 2)

no chance, Fed will take him to school in straight sets.

LOL Magic, I would agree that in tennis anything can happen, but to "expect" the FED to lose?! NEVER! :)

I'm off this site for a month if MJ76 is right on this one.

Expect Fed to don the the practice kit again tonight in this exo. 63-62.

Really well played by Federer.

Btw, I definitely hate the centre court camera angle view.

Emiliano55 , 8/16/12 9:55 PM

The view I hate is when they show the receiving players level view.

MJ76, just a suggestion but maybe after your analysis and before posting your picks, switch picks!

Well looks like I'll be on here for another month after all.
