  • Cilic clashes with Andujar in Cincinnati third round

Cilic clashes with Andujar in Cincinnati third round A surprising third-round matchup pits Marin Cilic against Pablo Andujar on Thursday in Cincinnati. The winner will be set for a likely quarterfinal showdown with Novak Djokovic.

Marin Cilic and Pablo Andujar will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they collide in the third round of the Western & Southern Open on Thursday.

After a slow, injury-plagued start to the season, Cilic is catching fire in time for the final Grand Slam. The 6'6'' Croat is back up to No. 15 in the world thanks to a title at Queen's Club, a fourth-round showing at Wimbledon, another title in Umag, and a semifinal finish in Hamburg. Cilic, who lost in the Toronto third round last week, has improved his 2012 record to 29-13 with victories this week over Sergiy Stakhovsky and Jesse Levine.

Andujar was on a horrendous six-match losing streak heading into Toronto, but he ended it with a win over Lukas Lacko before testing John Isner in a tough two-setter. So far in Cincinnati the 40th-ranked Spaniard has taken out Marinko Matosevic and world No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic, although Tipsarevic retired down a set and a break due to heat. Andujar is a mediocre 18-20 for the year.

The courts are playing relatively slow this week, and that will help Andujar's upset chances. He does his best work on clay, while Cilic would much prefer to contest this one a lightning-quick surface. Still, count on Cilic getting the job done in two close sets.
