  • Fish takes on Haas in Washington, D.C. semifinals

    8/4/12 5:45 AM | Ricky Dimon
Fish takes on Haas in Washington, D.C. semifinals Fellow veterans Mardy Fish and Tommy Haas will clash in the Washington, D.C. semis on Saturday. The winner is set to face either Alexandr Dolgopolov or Sam Querrey for the title.

Mardy Fish and Tommy Haas will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers and for the first time since 2007 when they collide in the semifinals of the Citi Open on Saturday.

Haas leads the head-to-head series 3-1, including 3-0 on hard courts. Fish's lone victory came via first-set retirement during the clay-court event in Houston six years ago.

Fish, though, has to be favored this time around. While 2012 has not been as kind to the top-seeded American as 2010 and 2011 were, he is heating up in Washington, D.C. The injury-plagued world No. 15 overcome Bjorn Phau in three sets then easily dismissed both Ricardas Berankis and Xavier Malisse.

Haas is healthy and enjoying a career resurgence at 34 years old. The German recently beat Roger Federer for the Halle title prior to Wimbledon and his record for the season stands at 22-9. So far this week he has taken out Michael Russell, Leonardo Mayer, and countryman Tobias Kamke without dropping a single set.

Even with Sam Querrey and Alexandr Dolgopolov still alive in the other half of the bracket, this is a matchup worthy of a final. Expect a high-quality three-setter with a slight edge going to Fish.

I peeked in on Tennis Channel's coverage and Rock Creek Park is like empty.
