• Tipsarevic, Isner battle for quarterfinal berth

    8/1/12 12:24 AM | Kelli DeMario
Tipsarevic, Isner battle for quarterfinal berth Seventh seed Janko Tipsarevic looks to reach the final eight at the Olympic Games, as he takes the court against 10th seed John Isner. The winner awaits either world No. 1 Roger Federer or Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin in the next round.

World No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic leads world No. 11 John Isner 1-0 in the series, having won their only previous meeting in 2009. The players are set to play for the first time on grass.

Tipsarevic is through to the round of 16 following his three-set ousting of Germany's Philipp Petzschner. The 28-year-old fell behind a set before rallying to win in three, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Tipsarevic is bidding for his 42nd victory of the season.

Isner advanced to the third round after dismissing Tunisia's Malek Jaziri in straight sets. The 27-year-old American remains on course to make his eighth quarterfinal in 2012.

    Prediction: Isner in three sets.

Seriously, how can anyone return those bombs served by Isner?
It's too bad that an all around better player has to lose only because the other guy serves out of this universe (almost happened to Murray against Karlovic a few weeks ago). As the American commentators themselves said: "Great players like Tipsarevic can', actually, play tennis against Isner."

Anyhow... congrats to John with my wholehearted wishes to serve even better against Roger.

danica , 8/1/12 9:15 PM

I don't see Roger beating Isner. Two tiebreakers and Federer will be out. Nole will be out too against Tsonga.

Um Fed can win tiebreakers too. He may get back enough of those big serves anyway. Isner is not invincible on grass. He can't bend low enough and Fed will slice him repeatedly. Tsonga will probably be too tired but since danica wished for Isner to serve even better against TMF I too shall wish for Tsonga to serve even better against the Djoker.

Emiliano..too bold a pick

I dont think either Fed or Novak will go out, both will be challenged but they will find a way to win.

Tipsarevic is not the better all-around player than Isner. Hence this result.

Ricky - What is your pred of Tsonga/Nole and FEd/Isner?

sanju , 8/2/12 6:33 AM

I see a lot of sour grapes here. What makes Tipsarevic a better player than Isner? And, I bet if it were janko who was serving better in that match, we'd be reading how imperious his serve looked. It's amazing how the attributes of the opponents are turned into negatives when the fave is beaten. Not to mention how another scenario is brought in, e.g., Murray/Karlovic, to add credence to the points made. If John were to beat Fed, as is wished, then let's hope he has a supreme serving day if he meets Djokovic. Be care what you wish for.

Well done Isner and sorry for Tipsy who is a great fighter.

Good luck for the match against Fed and I hope he plays great tennis and serves well. Go John.
