  • Mayer takes on Bolelli, Gulbis back in action

    7/24/12 10:09 PM | Ricky Dimon
Mayer takes on Bolelli, Gulbis back in action Florian Mayer will contest his Kitzbuhel opener on Wednesday against Simone Bolelli. Ernests Gulbis and Rogerio Dutra Silva are also looking for places in the quarterfinals.

Simone Bolelli vs. (2) Florian Mayer

Mayer is a disappointing 15-17 for the season, but he registers only six spots off his career-high ranking at No. 24 in the world because he saved his best tennis for Wimbledon. The German reached the quarterfinals before losing to top-ranked Novak Djokovic. Mayer advanced two rounds last week in Hamburg but got blown out by eventual runner-up Tommy Haas.

Following a first-round bye, Mayer is going up against Bolelli on Wednesday at the bet-at-home Cup. Bolelli opened on Tuesday night with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Horacio Zeballos to improve his ATP record for the year to 5-8. The Italian, fresh off a Challenger title last week, registers at No. 111 in the world rankings. Mayer in three sets is the pick, but an upset would not be surprising.

Rogerio Dutra Silva vs. (7) Ernests Gulbis

Dutra Silva and Gulbis will also be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers on Wednesday. The two competitors took very different paths to the second round; Dutra Silva got a first-set retirement from Jan Hajek while Gulbis recovered from 6-2, 5-2 down and saved a match point before beating Andreas Haider-Maurer 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Gulbis is in the midst of a bad 2012 campaign, but he has now won at least one match in each of his last four tournaments. Dutra Silva is a mere 2-3 at the ATP level this season and he owns five ATP wins in his career. The 107th-ranked Brazilian captured a Challenger title earlier this month so he should be playing with confidence. Look for Gulbis to be pushed in another three-set triumph.
