Monaco, Tipsarevic aim for Mercedes Cup semis Top two seeds Juan Monaco and Janko Tipsarevic will be in action on Friday in Stuttgart. Standing in their way of the semifinals are Pavol Cervenak and Bjorn Phau.

    (Q) Pavol Cervenak vs. (2) Juan Monaco

Monaco is the midst of arguably his best season on tour and he is up to a career-high ranking of No. 14 in the world for his efforts. The Argentine will look to keep it going in the Mercedes Cup quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. Monaco, a two-time title winner in 2012 and also a Miami semifinalist, kicked off his week with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tobias Kamke on Thursday.

Up next for Stuttgart's No. 2 seed is a first-ever meeting with Cervenak, who has to feel right at home at this event. The 25-year-old Slovak's first ATP quarterfinal came last year in Stuttgart and he has done it again thanks to victories over Sergiy Stakhovsky and Tommy Haas. Cervenak even qualified just to get into the main draw, but look for his improbable week to end at Monaco's hands in straight sets.

    (1) Janko Tipsarevic vs. Bjorn Phau

Tipsarevic and Phau will also be squaring off for the first time in their careers during quarterfinal action on Friday. Phau is one of three Germans still alive in Stuttgart (Dustin Brown and Cedrik-Marcel Stebe) despite Thursday's loss by Tommy Haas. The 32-year-old earned his fifth and sixth ATP-level wins of the season by taking out Martin Fischer and Lukas Rosol.

This will be a step up in class for Phau, as Tipsarevic is the No. 8 player in the world and the No. 1 seed at this tournament. Following a first-round bye, the Serb rolled over Steve Darcis 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday. Tipsarevic, putting a third-round Wimbledon loss to Mikhail Youzhny behind him, is 33-14 for his 2012 campaign. Count on Tipsarevic cruising past Phau in two sets.
