  • Verdasco and Dolgopolov in Umag action

    7/12/12 2:33 PM | Cheryl Murray
Verdasco and Dolgopolov in Umag action Top seed Fernando Verdasco and No. 3 Alexandr Dolgopolov will take the court on Thursday in search of quarterfinals spots in Umag.

Fernando Verdasco (1) vs. Ernests Gulbis

This match features two of the more unpredictable players on tour. Fernando Verdasco’s last three results featured a third round showing at the French Open, a first round loss at the Prostejov Challenger event, and a third round showing at Wimbledon.

Ernests Gulbis was consistently losing in the first round headed into Wimbledon, but when he got there, he played brilliantly in the first round, dispatching world No. 7 Tomas Berdcyh. He followed up that win with a loss to world No. 136 Jerzy Janowicz.

Verdasco, ranked 16 in the world , is more consistent than No.78 Gulbis, but on any given day, Gulbis can put in a brilliant showing and produce upsets. Verdasco should get through this one, but it wouldn’t be a massive surprise if Gulbis pulled the upset.

Alexandr Dolgopolov (3) vs. Fabio Fognini

Italy’s Fabio Fognini considers himself a clay courter, but he didn’t put up great results for the majority of the clay court season. He made the finals in Bucharest, but otherwise his results ranged from mediocre to poor on the dirt.

The Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov, ranked 19 in the world, had a spotty spring clay court swing. He had a quarterfinal showing in Madrid, but lost in the first round at Roland Garros. He also managed to win just 1 match during the short grass court season.

Prediction – Dolgopolov appears to be off-form. This might be an upset in the making.
