• Tomic, Haas in action at Mercedes Cup

    7/12/12 12:58 AM | Ricky Dimon
Tomic, Haas in action at Mercedes Cup Bernard Tomic and Tommy Haas will take the court on Thursday in Stuttgart. Tomic opens against Thomaz Bellucci while Haas continues his campaign vs. Pavol Cervenak.

    (3) Bernard Tomic vs. Thomaz Bellucci

Tomic and Bellucci will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they clash in round two of the Mercedes Cup on Thursday. Slumps cannot be unexpected for Tomic at just 19 years old, but he is definitely in one right now. The Australian is on a four-match losing streak that dates back to the second round of the French Open. He dropped his Wimbledon opener to David Goffin as his 2012 record fell to 19-16.

Bellucci has not been great of late, either. The Brazilian is an even 13-13 for the year and he finds himself down at No. 65 in the world. However, Bellucci is coming off a clay-court Challenger title last week and he won his Stuttgart first-round match over wild card Robin kern in straight sets. Because this one is on clay, look for Bellucci to take out the No. 3 seed in three sets.

    (8) Tommy Haas vs. (Q) Pavol Cervenak

Haas is back on the court after overcoming Igor Andreev 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday. The 34-year-old German is now 15-7 for his 2012 campaign, which includes a recent title in Halle (beat Roger Federer in the final). Haas is armed with a clean bill of health and he has climbed to No. 52 in the rankings.

Up next for the crowd favorite in Stuttgart is a first-ever meeting with Cervenak, who is already in the midst of his best week on tour this year. The 25-year-old Slovak qualified for the main draw then upset Sergiy Stakhovsky for his first tour-level victory in 2012 (fifth in his career). Look for Haas to end the world No. 206's run in straight sets.
