  • Isner and Mahut renew rivalry in Newport

    7/11/12 4:37 AM | Cheryl Murray
Isner and Mahut renew rivalry in Newport John Isner and Nicolas Mahut will be back on a grass court after successive first-round meetings at Wimbledon in 2010 and 2011.

John Isner (1) vs. Nicolas Mahut

American John Isner and Nicolas Mahut of France made tennis history in 2010 with their 11-hour first-round match at Wimbledon, the longest in tennis history. Isner won 70-68 in the fifth set. The two men met again in the first round the next year, but Isner took that one easily.

Mahut might have an opportunity to get some revenge in Newport. Isner hasn't been playing well on grass this year. The American lost in the first round of Wimbledon and didn't participate in any warm-up tournaments prior to the Championships.

Prediction – If Mahut serves well, he could snag the upset win over the defending champion.

    Sam Querrey vs. Dudi Sela

Unlike Davis Cup teammate Isner, Sam Querrey has been in good form since the grass season started. The world No. 55 made the semifinals at Queen's Club and the third round at Wimbledon.

Querrey will take on Israel's Dudi Sela, ranked No. 115 in the world, on Wednesday. Querrey holds a 1-0 head-to-head advantage over Sela, with their only other meeting coming in Los Angeles in 2009.

Sela is likely to have difficulty with the Querrey serve, which has been clicking nicely for the last few tournaments.

Prediction – Querrey in straight sets.
