  • Tsonga, Kohlschreiber battle for Wimbledon semifinals

Tsonga, Kohlschreiber battle for Wimbledon semifinals A semifinal spot will be at stake when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga goes up against Philipp Kohlschreiber on Wednesday at Wimbledon. The winner is on course to meet either Andy Murray or David Ferrer.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Philipp Kohlschreiber will be doing battle for the seventh time in their careers and for the third time this season when they clash during quarterfinal action on Wednesday at Wimbledon.

Tsonga is dominating the head-to-head series 5-1, but they have never faced each other on grass. Both of their 2012 encounters have gone Tsonga's way; 6-4, 7-6(2) in Miami and 6-2, 6-4 on the Monte-Carlo clay. The Frenchman has won eight consecutive sets at Kohlschreiber's expense.

Right now, however, Kohlschreiber seems to be playing the best tennis of his career. The 30th-ranked German is 31-14 for the year, which includes a title in Munich and a recent upset of Rafael Nadal in Halle. So far at the All-England Club Kohlschreiber has taken out Tommy Haas, Malek Jaziri, Lukas Rosol, and Brian Baker. In the process he has won nine consecutive sets.

Tsonga has been even better. The world No. 5 dismissed Lleyton Hewitt, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Lukas Lacko, and Mardy Fish to book his spot in the quarters. He has dropped only two sets (one to Garcia-Lopez, one to Fish) and just one of his 11 victorious sets has progressed to a tiebreaker.

"The best match of his life," Tsonga said when asked about what he expects from Kohlschreiber. "He has never reached the semis, so of course he will play hard. I expect to have a very, very tough match. We have nothing to lose."

Kohlschreiber's form suggests this one will be competitive, but the question is can he win a set. Tsonga has owned him recently and he has a ton of confidence, so look for the favorite to win a high-quality three-setter.
