• Federer takes on Youzhny in Wimbledon quarterfinals

    7/3/12 11:28 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer takes on Youzhny in Wimbledon quarterfinals Roger Federer continues his quest for a seventh Wimbledon title on Wednesday. Standing in Federer's way of the semifinals is Mikhail Youzhny.

Roger Federer and Mikhail Youzhny will be squaring off for the 14th time in their careers when they collide in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon on Wednesday.

Like he is doing to so many others, Federer is making a mockery of the head-to-head series with Youzhny. The veteran Swiss is a perfect 13-0 against his fellow 30-year-old, including 5-0 on grass. They faced each other in the fourth round at the All-England Club last season, with Federer prevailing 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. A recent semifinal clash last month in Halle went Federer's way 6-1, 6-4.

Not much has been quite so routine for Federer at the All-England Club. After dispatching Albert Ramos and Fabio Fognini, the six-time champion recovered from two sets down to beat Julien Benneteau then survived a back scare and held off Xavier Malisse in four sets on Monday.

Youzhny has finally completed the career Grand Slam quarterfinal, having now reached the last eight in all four majors. The 33rd-ranked Russian had been 0-5 lifetime in the Wimbledon fourth round before outlasting Denis Istomin 7-5 in the fifth on Monday. Youzhny preceded that with performance with easier victories over Donald Young, Inigo Cervantes, and Janko Tipsarevic.

"We've played a lot on grass," Federer noted. "We know what to expect, both of us. I think he's a great player. He can take the ball early. He can mix it up well. He's a great fighter. I had an extremely tough match with him last year on Court 1. I expect something similar, so I hope to recover and play a good match against him."

Their history suggests Youzhny has no chance in this one unless Federer is less than 100 percent. Assuming he is close to his best physically, Federer should cruise into the semis after no more than four sets.

Youzhny has a good backhand and a strategic mind but he played too long in his last match.Federer will likely win in three sets.

stratocast51 , 7/4/12 1:34 AM

no stratocast- Fed will be taken to 5 in this one- he will win but it will be a 5 setter; even the tsonga kohli match won't be one sided- could be 4 or 5, Murray will win in straight or 4 at the most; Djoker Mayer difficult to say - could be another big upset like Nadal to make Fed path to the final easy........... it is Fed vs Murray in the final- Murray to win a set or two after never having won a set in the GS finals he made; Murray to win the US open- the 4 GS distributed between the top 4 in the order of rankings althought that changes now with Nadal going to 3, Fed going to 1 if this happens, Djoker going to 2, Murray remaining at 4

MAGICJOHNSON76 , 7/4/12 2:19 AM

man proposes, tennis god this point, my money is on Andy winning his first GS here.

phoenix , 7/4/12 7:24 AM

^^^ For that to happen, both Mayer and Youzhny will have to pull of an upset. But how the things have gone so far at this tournament, there's a hope for him.

abhirf , 7/4/12 7:44 AM

Fed Fed Fed... come on.

Aleer Roger.

tomnjerry2 , 7/4/12 9:45 AM

Hopefully the back won't flare up again this match! If Federer is physically fine, he'll win this in three. Maybe Youzhny can make this competitive for a set or 2. In the end it should be Fed who books his place in the semis.

Bonker , 7/4/12 10:58 AM

I hope Youzhny plays great tennis and may the best man on the day win.

Good luck Mikhail.

schatz , 7/4/12 11:55 AM

^^^ Looks like your hope won't be coming true! Fed is simply toying with Youzhny. I think that Nole vs Mayer match is more interesting, judging by the closeness of the score. I hope Nole beats Mayer and meets Fed in the SF, as it looks like Fed will be in the SF given Youzhny's feeble response.

luckystar , 7/4/12 2:41 PM

The Nole/Mayer match is certainly more competitive and more entertaining. Nole takes the first set. He's on track to meet Fed in the SF.

luckystar , 7/4/12 3:12 PM

Youzhny has suddenly started bashing the ball much harder but to no avail. Fed gets the double break in 2nd set getting a chance to serve it out.

abhirf , 7/4/12 3:26 PM

How is Federer's back and movement ? Do he still look affected by this like it did vs Malisse ?

Emiliano55 , 7/4/12 3:35 PM

Back on track!

sabs , 7/4/12 3:36 PM

Nothing wrong with Fed...
...and Misha is pathetic... even more than Xavier...

zare , 7/4/12 3:43 PM

@Emiliano- well he is looking fine at the moment. Though I am still concerned about his back. I saw a footage on 'Star Sports' of his practice session earlier this morning and he looked in a bit of strain to me.

RickyDimon , 7/4/12 3:58 PM

Fed is hitting those CC FH's really well today.

abhirf , 7/4/12 4:00 PM

Nothin to worry... he had a back spasm... for Gods sake? He admitted it!
It's not injury...
When Benneteau got his leg spasm treatment... umpire said it won't allowed to continue with treatment... ofc... for Fed it's another story... looooong pause when he is "injured"...

zare , 7/4/12 4:04 PM

nice MP, Fed

RickyDimon , 7/4/12 4:10 PM

Congrats Fed! Hoping to bring out your best in the next match against Nole. Allez Roger!!

abhirf , 7/4/12 4:12 PM

Very clean match by Federer. Wasn't moving perfectly but he did get around the court much better than against Malisse.

Of course Djokvoic plays error-free tennis, so I hope Federer sits down and thinks of some kind of strategy instead of just trying to hit 90 winners. I just hope he does better than he did at the French. He was up a break in the 1st, muliple breaks in the 2nd, but still coudn't handle Djokvoic's amazing return game.

Bharata , 7/4/12 5:34 PM

Even tho Federer gets to 100% physically, Djokovic has been playing god mode like he did last year. I think it will be 60-40 for Djokovic.

Emiliano55 , 7/4/12 5:42 PM

^^ It's true, Djokvoic is younger, faster, healthier, and just in general a far more solidly consistent player on both wings than than Fed is now (and perhaps ever was). Djokjvoic will try to turn it into a physical war and Fed will just be aiming for first strike tennis. Fed can stay competitive if he serves very well, and thne hope for a tiebreak here and there. If he's going to win it has to be in 4 .

Bharata , 7/4/12 5:46 PM

Fed played well today, this makes me believe match between Fed and Nole is wide open..I thought Nole will whack him seeing 3rd and 4th round matches, but today Fed played well(ofcourse Youzhny is a nutcase..just hate him)..

We got our dream semi..thats great..I am rooting for Nole to reach the final..

Did you guys know if Nole beats Fed in Wimby, he would have beaten Fed at all 4 slams..Rafa hasnt beaten Fed at USO yet as they never met sadly

sanju , 7/4/12 6:06 PM

Fed reaches 32nd Grandslam All time record for an All time champion. Bless ya Rog. Aleer
