  • Tsonga, Fish collide with quarterfinal spot at stake

    7/1/12 7:19 AM | Ricky Dimon
Tsonga, Fish collide with quarterfinal spot at stake A big-serving affair is on Monday's fourth-round schedule at Wimbledon with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga set to face Mardy Fish. Tsonga is hoping to continue his quest for a second straight semifinal showing at the All-England Club.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Mardy Fish will be squaring off for the third time in their careers when they battle for a place in the quarterfinals on Monday at Wimbledon. Tsonga won both of their meetings in 2011, 6-4, 6-7(5), 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the fourth round of the U.S. Open and 7-6(4), 6-1 at the World Tour Finals.

The two players have taken roundabout ways in 2012 to get to the second week at the All-England Club. Tsonga has been armed with a clean bill of health and he has turned it into a solid 32-12 record for the season. Fish, on the other hand, dealt with a heart scare in the spring and early summer and had not played since Houston prior to this event.

As such, Fish has done extremely well to make it this far. In between straight-set wins over Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo and David Goffin, the 10th-seeded American survived James Ward in five. Tsonga has dropped just a single set in victories over Lleyton Hewitt, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, and Lukas Lacko.

Fish bounced back admirably from his five-setter against Ward and it was crucial that he finished the job against Goffin in straights. The 30-year-old will have a chance in this one if he serves well, but Tsonga is looking too strong. Count on the world No. 6 advancing in no more than four sets.

Good prediction Ricky, but I was hoping you'd not be right. Considering all that Mardy has gone through over the past 3 months, I'd say he should be proud of his run at Wimby. Hopefully, he'll do much better at the USO. here's hoping ....

Ricky,

You are too much! Oh well, I guess you deserve to pat yourself on the back. :)
