  • Tipsarevic faces Youzhny, Verdasco meets Malisse

    6/28/12 6:50 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tipsarevic faces Youzhny, Verdasco meets Malisse Two tough third-round matchups feature seeds Janko Tipsarevic, Fernando Verdasco, and Mikhail Youzhny. Xavier Malisse, traditionally a strong performer at Wimbledon, is also seeking a spot in the second week.

    (26) Mikhail Youzhny vs. (8) Janko Tipsarevic

Youzhny and Tipsarevic will be going head-to-head for the fifth time in their careers when they clash in round three of Wimbledon on Friday. They have split their four previous encounters, all of which have come on hard courts. Youzhny won their most recent encounter 6-3, 6-4 two years ago in Dubai while Tipsarevic's last win in the series came at the 2008 Sony Ericsson Open.

Tipsarevic is enjoying the better season of the two competitors. The eighth-ranked Serb owns a 32-13 record after taking out David Nalbandian and Ryan Sweeting, dropping one set to Sweeting in the process. Youzhny, a solid 21-9 for his 2012 campaign, booked his spot in this matchup thanks to wins over Donald Young and Inigo Cervantes. An upset is possible, but a slight edge goes to Tipsarevic based on current form.

    (17) Fernando Verdasco vs. Xavier Malisse

Malisse has always been a stellar performer at Wimbledon and nothing has changed even at 31 years old. The Belgian, a semifinalist in 2002, is 22-11 lifetime at the All-England Club after taking out Marinko Matosevic and Gilles Simon in straight sets so far this fortnight. Malisse had been slumping mightily earlier in the season but is back on track now that surfaces are speeding up.

Verdasco is 0-2 lifetime against Malisse, having lost a pair of decisions in 2011. The Spaniard advanced to the Wimbledon third round with wins over Jimmy Wang and Grega Zemlja. He is a decent 23-12 for the year as he bids for a spot in the fourth round for the fourth time in his career (he has never advanced past that stage). Look for Malisse to dismiss the No. 17 seed in four sets.
