• Federer begins Wimbledon campaign against Ramos

Federer begins Wimbledon campaign against Ramos Roger Federer will take the court on Monday at the All-England Club, set to go up against Albert Ramos. John Isner and Alejando Falla are also in action.

    (3) Roger Federer vs. Albert Ramos

Federer will begin his quest for a seventh Wimbledon title--which would be his first since 2009--on Monday. The third-ranked Swiss is playing well and boasts a strong 39-6 record for the season, but he is still looking to break the stranglehold that Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have on the top two ranking spots. Federer lost to Djokovic in the French Open semis and he is coming off an upset loss to Tommy Haas in the Halle title match.

Up first for Federer at the All-England Club is Ramos, whom he has never faced. The 43rd-ranked Spaniard owns 18 of his 33 career ATP match wins in 2012, including four in Casablanca en route to the final. Ramos, however, does by far his best work on clay. Facing Federer on grass is a disastrous matchup for the underdog, so this should be over in straight sets.

    (11) John Isner vs. Alejandro Falla

Isner and Falla will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers when they clash in round one on Monday. Both of their previous encounters saw Isner battle back from a set down. The 6'9'' American won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 four years ago in Las Vegas and survived a 4-6, 7-6(10), 7-5 thriller one season later in Paris.

Although Isner has wins this year over Federer and Djokovic, he cooled off in a hurry during the clay-court swing. The world No. 10 is famous at Wimbledon for his exploits against Nicolas Mahut, but he has never made it past the second round. Falla cannot be discounted despite an awful 7-14 ATP record this season; the 73rd-ranked Colombian took Federer to five sets at this event in 2010. Isner in four sets is the pick.

Roger is on #1 court tomorrow not CC - that will be a shock to the system. Berdych vs Gulbis are on CC.

may be it will comfort your mind lil bit.

KMA , 6/24/12 9:05 PM

Well, at least some people are not letting sentiment cloud their judgment.............

rafaisthebest , 6/24/12 9:06 PM

Fed on court 1 in early easier round so that Nole and Rafa can be pushed out there in more critical rounds.

Conspirator , 6/24/12 9:13 PM

Fed is going have to play great tennis to win this one :)

Yes, the truth is out there somewhere conspirator............let the games begin!

schatz , 6/24/12 9:21 PM

Federer wearing grandpa's cardigan ?
He was 6th sports men's top earnings last year with 35 million in his bank accounts and still stuffs a free wimbledon towel in his bag before leaving court! It is about time they paid for them like the fans have to

sals3 , 6/25/12 7:17 PM

To be fair, I doubt that those towels would get a second use at Wimby.

Just because the grass is green, doesn't mean that the tournament is.

Conspirator , 6/25/12 8:31 PM

The players are given the towels as gratis for their participation in the tournament. Some of them keep the towels as souvenirs. WOW, Fed's one lucky guy that he creates such discord in people's minds that they have to pay attention to his every action -- talk about obsession, it's all here and, so funny to read.

scoretracker , 6/26/12 5:35 AM

Are you Dutch scoretracker... saw you use the word gratis ;-)

Bonker , 6/26/12 9:20 AM

Oh, give the players a break. They are entitled to the towels and the tournaments don't mind them taking them for their friends and relatives. They did a video-cam with Tipseravic, I think it was at the FO, and he openly showed them the towels he was taking for his friends. It's the perks of the job.

John McEnroe during Wimbledon's preview at ESPN earlier today, "So many people admire Roger Federer and believe that he's the greatest tennis player who ever lived, I think that's my opinion. With do respects to players like Rafa and Novak. Roger Federer is really a class of his own." He is damn right, Roger is gonna win his seventh title!!

taxon , 6/26/12 11:34 AM

It was McEnroe who started all this Federer is GOAT nonsense.

Yes, Roger is in a class of his own because he is owned by Rafa.

nadline , 6/26/12 11:58 AM

@taxon, indeed. Very soon he will have the dubious distinction of being a GOAT with a losing H2H against Rafa and Novak!

He truly will be in a class of his own..................

rafaisthebest , 6/26/12 12:32 PM

Interesting because IMHO Johnny Mac is the most talented player ever to pick up a raquet, a wooden one at that. I don't care either that his slam total is way behind Rog/Raf etc. Probably because he hated

deuce , 6/26/12 1:23 PM

^^That might well be true. He matched Borg's physicality with point construction (of which he was a master). And I truly believe that nobody will ever be as good at net as John was.

cherylmurray , 6/26/12 1:49 PM

Completely agree cheryl, no one like him. I've seen him play veterans a few times and the "magic" is still there.
