  • Roddick and Baghdatis in second round action

    6/20/12 4:26 AM | Cheryl Murray
Roddick and Baghdatis in second round action American Andy Roddick and Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus will take the court in Eastbourne for quarterfinal berths.

Andy Roddick (6) vs. Jeremy Chardy

American Andy Roddick advanced to the second round after countryman Sam Querrey was forced to retire with a back injury; Roddick was up 5-2 when Querrey pulled out.

Roddick played poorly at Queen’s Club last week, but he looked better against Querrey. He’ll take on Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in his second round match. Despite his 2-0 advantage over the Frenchman, this may not be an easy match for the struggling Roddick.

Both of their other matches, which took place in 2009 and 2010, were tight affairs. Roddick has historically done damage with a massive first serve; if that shot is firing for the American, he will come away with the victory. But if he struggles, Chardy will get the upset win.

    Marcos Baghdatis vs. Steve Darcis

Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis had an emphatic win over No. 8 seed Pablo Andujar in the first round. The Cypriot displayed excellent form for the 6-1, 6-1 lead. His second round opponent will be Belgian Steve Darcis. The Belgian is ranked 72 in the world, low enough that he sometimes plays on the Challenger circuit.

Baghdatis holds a 2-0 record over Darcis, with their last match coming last year at Winston-Salem. World No. 42 Baghdatis won in straight sets.

Darcis has issues with consistency; Baghdatis will be favored going into the match, which should end with a straight set victory for the Cypriot.
