• Federer, Haas battle for Gerry Weber Open title

Federer, Haas battle for Gerry Weber Open title Roger Federer, as expected, finds himself in the Halle final on Sunday. Instead of a meeting with Rafael Nadal or Tomas Berdych, though, Federer will go up against Tommy Haas.

Roger Federer and Tommy Haas will be squaring off for the 13th time in their careers when they clash in the final of the Gerry Weber Open on Sunday afternoon.

Federer is dominating the head-to-head series 10-2, including 3-0 on grass and 2-0 in Halle. They battled in the 2005 and 2006 semifinals, with Federer winning a pair of competitive matches. Their most recent meeting came in the 2009 Wimbledon semifinals, where Federer prevailed 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-3.

At 34 years old, Haas is back on top of his game after months of injury problems. The German advanced to the third round of the French Open and he is an outstanding 13-6 at the ATP level this season following Halle wins over Bernard Tomic, Marcel Granollers, Tomas Berdych, and defending champ Philipp Kohlschreiber.

"To be in another final on German soil is fantastic for me," said Haas. "It's something I really hoped for to happen one more time. I'm going for my 13th title tomorrow, which is one huge goal that I still have, against possibly the greatest player of all time. It's an honor in many ways, but at the same time, once the ball is in play, I really don't care who's on the other side. You just try to win those big points and try to win the match."

Federer has bounced back nicely from a Roland Garros semifinal loss to Novak Djokovic. The third-ranked Swiss earned a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed then ousted Florian Mayer, Milos Raonic, and Mikhail Youzhny in succession. Federer needed a third-set tiebreaker to get past Raonic before dominating Youzhny 6-1, 6-4.

"Tommy and I share many years together on the tour and also our families are close," Federer explained. "I'm happy for him that he made it so far. I hoped that he'd find his way into the tournament and would have a good run. He's very dangerous on grass, so it won't be an easy final for me."

Haas has home-court advantage and he is playing stellar tennis at the moment, so this one should be competitive. Look for Federer to capture his 75th career ATP title (sixth in Halle) after two entertaining sets.

It has been a pleasure to see the FED playing on grass again, he moves so much better here than he does on clay. Go FED!

Do they even have to play this match...Fed in straight sets with a bagel or two.

Good luck Tommy - would be great if he could win in front of his home crowd.

schatz , 6/17/12 1:00 PM

Whoa! Well done Tommy!!!!!!

Haas beat Roger in straights? Is this a joke? Shocked

This is as shocking as Lleyton beating Roger at Halle, it was 2010 isnt it?

sanju , 6/17/12 2:54 PM

Congo Haas!!
Bad loss for Roger though :-(

abhirf , 6/17/12 2:57 PM

nice prediction, Phoenix!

I thought Haas played well against Kohlie yesterday and with Fed making more UEs than usual the match could become interesting...and that is exactly what happened...however, the two of them are friends and they are close so it may as well be that Fed was not too keen to win today...anyway, I am glad Haas won this trophy because he will most likely retire soon...Bravo Haas!

Didn't see that coming. Haas must be playing very well or Fed not his usual self? Didn't get to watch the match but I didn't expect such a result. So Haas is two times chmpion now, not bad for a 34 yo guy. Well done!

Federer looked tired .like Nadal did in his match a few days ago. Tommy at 34 years old played good all week in Halle and it was great to see him get his 13th Title. But he had tape around his knees and on his back , hope this is for precaution only with Wimbledon around the corner .Congrats Tommy

Great for Haas! Congrats Haas and fans. Didn't watch this match but although I would have preferred the FED wins (he being my favourite), it's cool to have a 34 year old win. It that age it won't happen often, and who knows may be the last time (hope not). Enjoy your tennis.

This is akin to Nadal losing a barcelona final
