  • Berdych, Haas square off in Halle quarterfinals

Berdych, Haas square off in Halle quarterfinals A place in the semifinals is on the line as Tomas Berdych goes up against Tommy Haas on Friday in Halle. The winner will be on course for a potential matchup with Rafael Nadal.

Tomas Berdych and Tommy Haas will be meeting for the fourth time in their careers and for the first time since 2006 when they clash during quarterfinal action at the Gerry Weber Open on Friday afternoon.

Berdych leads the head-to-head series 2-1, including 1-0 on grass. Their most recent encounter came six years ago in the Wimbledon third round, with Berdych outlasting Haas 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(7), 4-6, 8-6. The Czech's other win over Haas also went to five sets (in Davis Cup), while Haas scored a 7-6(6), 6-1, 7-5 at the 2004 U.S. Open.

Both players are in fine form at the moment. Even at 34 years old and plagued by injuries, Haas is 11-6 at the ATP level this season. The German, playing in front of his home fans this week, dismissed Bernard Tomic and Marcel Granollers without losing a set to reach the quarters.

Berdych continues to play some of the best tennis of his life and he is on pace for another berth in London's World Tour Finals. The world No. 7 is 35-10 for his 2012 campaign after beginning in Halle with a routine win over Viktor Troicki.

Haas has never been one to go away without a fight, nor will the crowd let him. It has already been a good week for the wild card, and he has a chance to keep going. This one should be competitive, with an edge going to Berdych in three sets.
