  • Next stop Federer for Goffin's French Open trip

    6/2/12 6:48 PM | Ricky Dimon
Next stop Federer for Goffin's French Open trip David Goffin is the first lucky loser in the Roland Garros fourth round since 1978, but he runs into Roger Federer on Sunday. The winner will meet either Tomas Berdych or Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarterfinals.

Through the first three rounds of the French Open, Roger Federer did not play anyone ranked inside the Top 75 of the world rankings. The trend will continue on Sunday against the surprise of the tournament, lucky loser David Goffin.

Federer's second-round opponent--Adrian Ungur--had never played a main-draw match at a Grand Slam prior to this event and the case is the same for Goffin. The 21-year-old Belgian probably thought it would not happen for him in Roland Garros when he fell to Joao Sousa at the final stage of qualifying last week, but he got a lucky-loser spot and the rest is history.

Goffin opened with a 6-2, 4-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 upset of No. 23 seed Radek Stepanek before beating Arnaud Clement 3-6, 7-6(2), 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the Frenchman's final French Open match. The world No. 109 then ousted Lukasz Kubot 7-6(4), 7-5, 6-1 on Friday. He is now a perfect 3-0 for his main-draw Grand Slam career and 9-5 at the ATP level this season.

When I was young I had a lot of pictures in my bedroom of (Federer)," Goffin explained. "Now I'm playing against Roger and I can't believe it."

Federer was forced to work throughout the first week despite a relatively favorable draw on paper. The third-ranked Swiss beat world No. 78 Tobias Kamke in three uninspired sets before dismissing both world No. 92 Adrian Ungur and world No. 89 Nicolas Mahut in four. Federer, the champion last month in Madrid, is an outstanding 34-4 for his 2012 campaign.

The 2009 champion generally kicks into high gear toward the end of Grand Slams. It should have already happened by now, but Sunday would not be too late. Count on Federer raising his level and the enormity of the occasion being a little too much for Goffin, resulting in a straight-set decision.

tennis2011 , 6/2/12 9:53 PM

Best of luck to Goffin and I hope Fed is not on his A game today. He should save it for the next match or so.

abhirf , 6/3/12 3:20 AM

damp, slow, soft conditions today. Is an upset brewing for Goffin!?!??!?!

RickyDimon , 6/3/12 1:18 PM

this wont be as easy as many are expecting..I just have this impression that goffin can surprise us all by giving federer some worrisome trouble BUT I am well aware of how federer can raise and level and suppress any possible threat

vamosrafa , 6/3/12 2:20 PM

Fed through the semis is a lock. Don't be fooled. He only plays as good as he has to.

agfmilos , 6/3/12 2:47 PM

Goffin 2-1!

RickyDimon , 6/3/12 3:30 PM

This kid is GOOD! I like him very much. :)

croc , 6/3/12 3:48 PM

When asked about Godfin Fed should have said, "that's funny, I have posters of me in my room too!!!"

@nadline, hahah...but he is the swiss master..nobody can deny that :) whether a rafa fan or a fed fan, its undeniable.

vamosrafa , 6/3/12 4:20 PM

Sky #perspective classy tennis fan.

agfmilos , 6/3/12 4:21 PM

Goffin is the new Federer.

nadline , 6/3/12 4:24 PM

Likewise I'm a biiiig Rafa fan and hope he wins his seventh. But if Nole wins and holds all four that will be an amazing moment and I will celebrate his accomplishment. Likewise if Muzz could win his first ( sorry deuce not gonna happen) or if Fed could break his drought.

All would be great moments in tennis.

agfmilos , 6/3/12 4:27 PM

BTW, almost forgot, Goffin impressive but NO WAY does he win this match. Too much experience on Feddies side and eventually will be a combination of him adjusting and Goffin getting caught up in the moment but it's fun to watch.

agfmilos , 6/3/12 4:31 PM

Federer is the next Goffin

RickyDimon , 6/3/12 4:36 PM

Lol, people saying a lot about Fed vs Sampras vbefore the match - deja vu?

samprallica , 6/3/12 4:45 PM

woo! now that was cool! :) Serving for the SET! C'MON FED!

sky , 6/3/12 4:49 PM

tennis2011 , 6/3/12 4:56 PM

woo hoo! It's a TIE! C'MON FED!!!!!!!!! :)

sky , 6/3/12 4:56 PM

Fed and Djoker have restored order to the proceedings

RickyDimon , 6/3/12 5:00 PM

the FED breaks! :)

sky , 6/3/12 5:06 PM

Of course Fed is going to win in four sets now, never in doubt.

luckystar , 6/3/12 5:09 PM

Cant watch the match. But seems like he's playing really good. Will Fed's quarter streak finally come to an end?

abhirf , 6/3/12 5:10 PM

abhirf,
Didn't it come to an end some time last year?

chlorostoma , 6/3/12 5:14 PM

Fed is a break up in the 3rd

tennis2011 , 6/3/12 5:17 PM

tj600 , 6/3/12 5:24 PM

booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring

croc , 6/3/12 5:26 PM

Federer takes the 3rd set 6-2

tennis2011 , 6/3/12 5:26 PM

They are showing Seppi Djokoivc here in north america as welll...argh why can't w e all have coverage like the BBC covers wimbledon with all courts being covered ? :)
so how is FEd playing tj600? I guess he's spraying errors, but is he passive or is Goffin just playing great?
DJokoivc just won...

Bharata , 6/3/12 5:29 PM

Federer breaks in the 1st game of 4th set

tennis2011 , 6/3/12 5:33 PM

tj,
right you are, it's the semi final streak that bit the dust a while ago
it will be a sad day when the amazing quarter final streak comes to an end

chlorostoma , 6/3/12 5:33 PM

Bharata, 6/3/12 5:29 PM

Tennis is not taken seriously by North American broadcasters. NBC will likely show the fed match tape delayed long after the match is over and everyone knows the result. They will get low ratings and then argue that there is no market for tennis.

#selffullfillingprophecy

Hey, NBC, the '90s called, they want their tape delay back.

agfmilos , 6/3/12 5:41 PM

Oh my god....he looks like a 15 year old instead of 21 which is his actual age.....

fedexal , 6/3/12 5:42 PM

Wont be a sad day actually. After all, every streak has to come to an end.

abhirf , 6/3/12 5:43 PM

Cmon Fed fans..why are you so worried? He will wrap it up in 4

Fed will also be happy seeing Nole struggle so much..gives him a good chance of an upset

sanju , 6/3/12 5:45 PM

abhirf..I doubt ..Fed loosing before the qtrs ia a very tough ask..The top 8 ca maybe bump him in a slam but others to do is a very very tough ask..not in a slam for sure over 5 unless hes havng a really off horrible day

sanju , 6/3/12 5:47 PM

Goffin has game.

agfmilos , 6/3/12 5:55 PM

Fed is missing too many chances

tennis2011 , 6/3/12 6:03 PM

looks like the FED should make it 4, I really like Goffin, looking forward to his future

sky , 6/3/12 6:05 PM

it's not over till it's over, but the FED is serving for the match :)

sky , 6/3/12 6:11 PM

Congrats FED and FEDfans. Goffin and fans, WOW! GOFFIN!!!

sky , 6/3/12 6:19 PM

Fed wins in the end 5-7 7-5 6-2 6-4

tennis2011 , 6/3/12 6:20 PM

too bad someone had to loose the match today

sky , 6/3/12 6:21 PM

How did Goffin play....really interested in this kid.......

fedexal , 6/3/12 6:22 PM

For a moment I thought Goffin was going to put Roger in the coffin...

30love , 6/3/12 6:23 PM

@ 30love.................lol!!...........but it turns out that Fed had the advantage all along.............

Monalysa , 6/3/12 6:30 PM

Well played David Goffin - at least he got a well deserved set off Rog. I like his fighting spirit and his tennis, so I hope we will be seeing more of him in the future.
