• Nadal takes on Schwank in French Open third round

    6/2/12 3:06 AM | Cheryl Murray
Nadal takes on Schwank in French Open third round After decimating his first two opponents, defending champion Rafael Nadal will target Argentine Eduardo Schwank.

Rafael Nadal (2) vs. Eduardo Schwank

World No. 192 Eduardo Schwank has never had the chance to play Rafael Nadal; he will get that opportunity on Saturday. Nadal has been in fierce form during this clay-court season, with three titles coming into the French Open. And he seems to be continuing that form this week, with comprehensive wins in his first two rounds.

Schwank had a great win in the opening round over Ivo Karlovic and he upended Florian Mayer to reach the third round. Unfortunately for the Argentine, his run at the French Open stops here. Nadal in easy straight sets.

Nicolas Almagro (12) vs. Leonardo Mayer

Nadal's countryman Nicolas Almagro will take on Leonardo Mayer for a spot in the round of 16. Almagro has already had a good clay-court season. The Spaniard won titles in Sao Paolo during the South American swing and Nice just last week.

Mayer is ranked 62nd in the world. Until this week, the Argentine had suffered a dismal season full of early losses. But he defeated Olivier Rochus in the first round and had a shocking win over Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second. Almagro, though, is an outstanding clay-courter and unless he is suffering badly from fatigue, this is going to be the end of the line for Mayer.

Prediction – Almagro in straight sets.

Rafa got a prank call from French radio stationbefore his match with Bolelli: tm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=tennis

nadline , 6/2/12 10:08 AM

Rafa was very polite. He said he understand the joke but he was playing that day but the caller insisted that he would like to wash his hair before the match but Rafa charmingly said, 'another time'. The caller then told him that he likes him very much and wants him to win RG.

This is the 2nd time a radio station has tried this on, the first was in Belgium during the DC and both times Rafa has been charmingly understanding and didn't lose his rag.

nadline , 6/2/12 10:15 AM

such a pathetic attempt to disturb Nadal's sleep...I don't even find it funny...I thought the guy sounded ridiculous not knowing any English word...and he works on radio station?! I would sue this stupid French radio station...why don't they call Nole, he is the current No1, or Fed? I was just about to note how pleasantly I was surprised with the French crowd being welcoming and supportive of Rafa lately and then this happens...

Rafa is well brought young man and reacted with class...I admire his calmness and his politeness...for all he is on and off the court, he is the true inspiration for young generations and they will always look up to him no matter what some of these French doubters do or say...

Vamos Rafa!

natashao , 6/2/12 10:44 AM

Vamos our Rafa & God bless.

schatz , 6/2/12 11:20 AM

I thought the caller showed a lot of affection for Rafa, even the people in the background were supportive shouting 'voila' when the caller said he loves Rafa and wants him to win Roland Garros.

The others don't have Rafa's appeal that's why they leave them alone. Everyone wants a piece of Rafa because he is the one with charisma.

nadline , 6/2/12 11:45 AM

nadline, the way I understood it sounded more like ridicule for me...but that is just my Balkan's mentality and I may be wrong...however, the article about this incident I read in Bleacher Report actually started with a sentence: "Man, the French really don't like Rafael Nadal", so I guess I am not the only one to think of this as a silly prank call...certainly, not the right way to show affection for Rafa...

natashao , 6/2/12 12:40 PM

I see it completely the other way. Of course there are people on the Bleacher Report who would like to see a negative side to it, but I don't see the ridicule in pretending to be the hotel's hairdresser.

Had they phoned pretenting to be the WADA then there would have been no doubt about whether they were trying to ridicule him or not, but the guy sounded genuine when he said he likes Nadal and wants him to win RG and the people in the background cheered. That's not ridicule in my book and that would have gone a long way into making Rafa forget all the negative vibes at RG sometimes just before his first match.

nadline , 6/2/12 12:59 PM

Ricky might see this as a showdown.

sabs , 6/2/12 1:07 PM

it was National Donut Day yesterday. Don't be surprised if Schwank honors it by earing three of them today.

RickyDimon , 6/2/12 1:13 PM

U mean 3 BAGELS.......

hrsikesa , 6/2/12 1:24 PM

nadline, fine then, I sure would rather see it the way you say...Rafa simply deserve to be loved...

3 bagels you think? That would be great to see...

Vamos Rafa!

natashao , 6/2/12 1:27 PM

I wish I had Rafa's "colm", I would have told that caller to stick himself and his radio station up where the sun don't shine.............

It was early morning for crying out loud, on a day Rafa had a match..........

Why couldn't they call him on a day when he didn't have a match? No, that would have been too considerate towards Rafa..............

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 2:15 PM

If that prank had been played on any of the other top players I'm sure they would have loved the fact that they are getting some attention.

nadline , 6/2/12 2:20 PM

The price of stardom (especially Rafa stardom), I guess............

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 2:32 PM

It's been a very easy sail for top seeds so far, a joke actually!! I'm enjoying the other matches much better. sigh...

OnTheRise , 6/2/12 3:02 PM

The King's on Court!!

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 5:40 PM

Is it the shirt? Rafa looks like he's lost some weight............

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 5:47 PM

Can anyone post the link for live streaming.......

fedexal , 6/2/12 5:49 PM

1-0 with a break. Triple bagel still alive.

RickyDimon , 6/2/12 5:52 PM

here you go fedexal

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 6:15 PM

Ricky, lol ! comeonnn schwank aint that bad a player, he is hitting the well..HAHAHAHAH wohohoho rafa had no right to win that point at 30-30 , that's unfair to schwank ...any way, break point and a bagel in on if he takes it

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 6:21 PM

Schwank is getting killed he is not that bad a player

tennis2011 , 6/2/12 6:21 PM

on the other hand Raonic is having a lot of trouble vs monaco

tennis2011 , 6/2/12 6:22 PM

haha sorry ricky ! schwank played pretty well there..good tennis ! had 2 perfect points

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 6:23 PM

For a heavy guy, Schwank is moving very well................

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 6:24 PM

haha sorry ricky ! schwank played pretty well there..good tennis ! had 2 perfect points

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 6:24 PM

the backhand is getting better and so is the ROS. Rafa is getting better and better, just like 2008...if he can keep up the consistency and intensity, he'l be even more dangerous than 2008 because rafa is now a more complete and more aggressive player..

oh wow, schwank can hit some exquisite volleys ...doubles play has helped him in that department

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 6:32 PM

1st Rafa................breadstick served.............

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 6:33 PM

John McEnroe called Schwank "Florian Mayer"

RickyDimon , 6/2/12 6:33 PM

Bagles are selling like hot cakes at RG this year. Reechard just gave Haas a couple. I think Rafa is too nice togive 3 bagles, he's settled for a breadstick in the 1st set. Let's see how the rest go.

nadline , 6/2/12 6:33 PM

Thanks vamosrafa ....longish set in terms of time spent on court.........

fedexal , 6/2/12 6:34 PM

@ricky, seriously?! LOL, what was he thinking !!

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 6:37 PM

Come on our Rafa get your skates on and don't stop until you have whooshed past the finish line.

schatz , 6/2/12 7:05 PM

By Rafa's lofty standards, he's having an off day................

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 7:06 PM

Towel. Shorts pick. Bounce. Shorts pick. Shoulder pick (repeat other side). Nose rub. Hair over ear. Nose rub. Hair over other ear. Serve.

vrael , 6/2/12 7:15 PM

no idea. McInroe is crazy sometimes.

RickyDimon , 6/2/12 7:16 PM

Taylor Dent has company.

chr18 , 6/2/12 7:18 PM

2nd set Rafa...............

What, no bagel, no bread stick?................he's finished! He's on a downward spiral! The King of Clay is no more!!!!

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 7:19 PM

vrael, 6/2/12 7:15 PM

Don't worry..........won't be long before you have the pleasure of seeing Roger drop more sets against some lucky loser.............

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 7:22 PM

^^ i don't care about Roger federer...

vrael , 6/2/12 7:24 PM

If Rafa would want to have an offday, it would be today.....I hope he will get things sorted out.......Serve needs little improvement ....just a little fine tuning ....not a lot.......

fedexal , 6/2/12 7:26 PM

yeah some unusual errors coming from the nadal forehand...but he is still well in command so thats good news...6-2 is my guess

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 7:27 PM

true, the only weakness in his game seems to be his first serve.....hopefully he will do better going into the 2nd week.

vrael , 6/2/12 7:28 PM

@vrael......ok, ok................testing

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 7:29 PM

Wozniacki throws a temper tantrum and NBC immediately switches from Rafa to Wozniacki

RickyDimon , 6/2/12 7:29 PM

i am sure rafa will improve his first serve

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 7:30 PM

what did wozniaki do?

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 7:31 PM

3rd routine forehand Rafa's missed.............commies are saying it's a lapse in concentration.........agree with them

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 7:31 PM

Lovely smashes by RAFA

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 7:35 PM

Can't believe people think Raonic might trouble rafa at RG.

vrael , 6/2/12 7:35 PM

It seems Rafa is not comfortable with the overheads today............

fedexal , 6/2/12 7:35 PM

@ritb,rafa is playing fantastic tennis. He wont miss such easy balls in matches where his water-tight concentration will be on display..i am really happy about rafa's backhand

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 7:36 PM

^^yes, his backhand is beautiful today...........

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 7:39 PM

Honestly Rafa............he chases down every point even if he is 40-0 up

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 7:47 PM

One more game Rafa.......let's do it....

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 7:55 PM

come on rafa, finish it 6-3 now. Enough of the riffraff

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 7:55 PM

intensity and concentration weren't particularly high in this match. I like rafa's backhand...forehand, um no worries, its never going to betray him when he needs it in the later stages. Rafa will be working on his first serve..

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 7:59 PM

One look at Rafa's face, you know he's not a happy man. Where has his first serve gone? He's allowing this guy to hang around for too long, all because he can't use his serve to control the points. Rafa must be feeling tired now, with all the running. No wonder he stops chasing after the ball and allows his opponent to win the game and prefers to serve it out for the match.

Not a good performance by Rafa, below average IMO.

luckystar , 6/2/12 8:01 PM

GSM Rafa................well done, Vamos!!!!

Schwank impressed me, clearly comfortable on clay, he needs matches and he needs to lose weight.................

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 8:05 PM

not the best of wins but he played some great points too...he'l work on his 1st's all under control

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 8:07 PM

monaco in complete control against raonic

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 8:11 PM

I don't think Rafa was in kind of trouble lucky..........he did look a little flat, and although his 1st serve % was low he was never under pressure. But yes, that 1st serve % is not going to do the business in the second week, he needs to sort it out subito!!

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 8:13 PM

What is it about a potential Rafa-Raonic match that gets people all juiced up? I think it's oh so disrespectful to Rafa..................

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 8:15 PM

Schwank is a good doubles player and he showed some of his skills today. Rafa played well, his serve looked better today and he is moving very well.

nadline , 6/2/12 8:17 PM

Didnt see the match but getting very contradicting opinions reading the comments here.

So was it just the serve that was bad or even groundies were leaking errors?

Luckys comment has me a bit worried

sanju , 6/2/12 8:20 PM

The crowd singing happy birthday in French to Rafa!

That was...umm...unexpected.

vrael , 6/2/12 8:22 PM

sanju - Nadal was good. Very solid performance.

did not see the happy birthday. have a hard time believing that took place.

RickyDimon , 6/2/12 8:23 PM

@ vrael, 6/2/12 7:15 PM

that was hilarious!!! xD

OnTheRise , 6/2/12 8:25 PM

Thanks Ricky

Wow the French crowd taking to Rafa :-) They are kinda cheering him too this time..maybe its the scarlet fire doing the trick :-)

vrael..where are you seeing this ? Neosports showing the Granollers-Mathieu match

Match statistics in slam tracker shows 60% first serve and 87% first serve winning %. Well thats not too bad..okay 70% plus would be nice and Rafa usually serves at 70% plus

sanju , 6/2/12 8:27 PM

sanju...a friend was at PC for Rafa's match...she tweeted what she saw and heard...which was the crowd singing happy b'day in french...i am as shocked as anyone would

vrael , 6/2/12 8:31 PM

Cant believe Delpo Berdy is on Suzanne my opinion Stan-Tsonga and Berdy-Delpo should have been both on PC

Fed and Djoko both will roll over their opponents tomm, so they both could have been given SL, only Fed is given that..2nd time for Fed this tourney..bit of a surprise

sanju , 6/2/12 8:37 PM

So Monaco for Rafa...Monaco has played like 4.5 hours today

and surprise he has beaten Rafa once ..when was that :-) I rem their Davis cup match

sanju , 6/2/12 8:41 PM

there is no difference between Chatrier and Lenglen. They are both the main courts. Not 1 and 2.

RickyDimon , 6/2/12 8:41 PM

The colour of Rafa's shirt is Lust red I've read.

nadline , 6/2/12 8:42 PM

By his lofty standard, this is a so-so match. Didn't some of you here said that he's better than his 2008 FO? That Rafa was quicker than this and yet he need not do so much running. I thought he's supposed to make his opponent run instead of he himself doing all the running?

IMO, he's not thinking very well on the court, not adjusting his position behind the baseline but prefers to run after every ball especially the drop shots. This match reminds me of that Rome SF in 2010 against Gulbis, who drop shot Rafa like crazy and Rafa lost a set to Gulbis then. Schwank is definitely playing freely and not holding back. He's thinking on the court and throws in all sorts of varieities, this may be a good test for Rafa, or a wake up call for him, that there are players lurking around who can play like this and may catch him on his off or not so good day. Actually I was expecting Mayer to make it and gave Rafa a similar test in the second round but he failed to make it.

I'm thinking why Fed in his TMF days couldn't play like this to try and beat Rafa on clay. I'm sure he could do better than Schwank with all his varieties. Now Fed may be too old to play like this consistently to trouble Rafa, among the current players, maybe Murray is good enough to play his way on clay to hurt Rafa. I don't think Nole can play this way, though he has his own way of hurting Rafa.

luckystar , 6/2/12 8:43 PM

Yes could be Ricy but in most countries they usually show only PC matches when gets preference over SL

sanju , 6/2/12 8:44 PM

Man, again, you all are a bit too demanding. 1st serve pct was ever so slightly low at 59% not abysmal winning 86% on 1st serve. I thought he played very well overall. He does not need to play god like this early.

Ease up! You all want poor Schwank to go into therapy?

agfmilos , 6/2/12 8:50 PM

lucky, Rafa does not need to be spectacular in each and every game. Like Ricky said, he played a solid game, got the job done, Pico next.

I honestly did not see any cause for concern................

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 8:51 PM

A hiarious tweet on Granollers grunting..haha..on second thoughts his grunt was unbearable

@ShankTennis: Looking fwd too seeing if Granollers gives birth to a boy or a girl. He sounds close. If a boy he should call it Paulo.

sanju , 6/2/12 8:52 PM

A hiarious tweet on Granollers grunting..haha..on second thoughts his grunt was unbearable

@ShankTennis: Looking fwd too seeing if Granollers gives birth to a boy or a girl. He sounds close. If a boy he should call it Paulo.

sanju , 6/2/12 8:53 PM

sanju, Monaco had beaten Rafa at Cincy 2007; Rafa retired from that match with a shoulder injury, he can't even get his serve over the net on that day; I saw that match.

Not surprised that Fed is given SL court a second time, after all Nole was also there twice already. I expect Rafa to be there for his fourth round match vs Monaco, and Murray vs Gasquet will be at PC court.

luckystar , 6/2/12 8:56 PM

Rafa says he prefers SL because it's not as windy as PC.

nadline , 6/2/12 8:58 PM

@lucky, against federer rafa feels he needs to play the match of his life , all the time ! he knows he cannot afford those stupid lapses. Against schwank, I dont think he was thinking that way at all. That explains why rafa was not thinking too much out there to break those pattern of plays...I am satisfied with this performance !

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 9:00 PM

Honestly, I think Granollers's grunting is excessive.............he needs to be told to tone it down, discreetly

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 9:01 PM

^^^ or get a point deduction by that umpire, what's her name??

luckystar , 6/2/12 9:05 PM

Eva Asderaki

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 9:09 PM

No, he should incur SIGNIFICANT penalties.

RickyDimon , 6/2/12 9:16 PM

sanju@8.52, that's so funny. However, French crowd actually booed Granollers, that was shocking, and the guy on court didn't bother to interview him, went straight to PHM. How rude is that?

deuce , 6/2/12 9:24 PM

Interesting how the draw is panning out:

Nole's side: the big hitters are alive and well (Berdy, Delpo, Tsonga, Fed)

Rafa's side: the big hitters have folded and it's the clay courters who are alive and well (Almagro, Ferrer, Granollers, Pico)

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 9:31 PM

Pretty accurate take on Rafa's match by Hannah Wilks:

"You can?t be brilliant every day, but if you?re light years ahead of your opponent in skill, you don?t need to be. That?s the lesson people who watched Rafael Nadal?s 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Eduardo Schwank in the third round of Roland Garros will probably take away from today?s match.

In his first two matches, Nadal?s play shone as brightly as his shirt, but there was a definite lack of sparkle and intensity in his routine win today. Still, the result was never really in doubt." n-nadal-d-schwank.html

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 9:36 PM

I think they booed Granollers because of the way he celebrates after the win. He's forgetting he has just beaten a French guy on French soil in front of the French people.

luckystar , 6/2/12 9:39 PM

Nadals draw is easier than that of Djokovic

tennis2011 , 6/2/12 9:47 PM

^^^you had to go there, didn't you?

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 9:50 PM

there are dangerous players like Federer, Del Potro and Berdych in Djokovics half

tennis2011 , 6/2/12 9:50 PM

..............and Pico, Ferrer, Almagro, Muzza are not?

rafaisthebest , 6/2/12 9:52 PM

1 of Del potro or berdych should have been in Nadals half too many big hitters in Djokovics half

tennis2011 , 6/2/12 9:55 PM

Djokovic has played qualifiers so far, with the exception of Starace.

nadline , 6/2/12 10:18 PM

what do you mean too many big hitters ! you are talking as if federer would have to face both of these two big hitters, he'l just have to face ONE of them , what's the big deal?

vamosrafa , 6/2/12 10:23 PM

I was the one who discussed that Rafa may be better than his 2008 RG this year. I stand by that comment. One less than stellar match against a qualifier will not change my opinion. The goal is to win these early round matches and work to peak in the second week. Rafa knew that Schwank wasn't going to trouble him, so he played well enough to win. This match is not a true indication of just how well he is playing on clay this year.

We don't need Rafa to give a masterclass to Schwank. I think it's a mistake to overanalyze this match. Rafa didn't need to be great today. Simple as that. Rafa knows what he is doing. Why should he push himself to make the score look more lopsided?

Granollers should have been given some kind of penalty. That was completely unwarranted and just excessive. I think that Mathieu just ran out of gas in that fifth set.

I watched some of Monaco/Raonic. Monaco is the more experienced clay court player and it showed today. I don't think either one of them has a chance against Rafa. We will have to see what Monaco has left after this match.

I have confidence that Rafa will go up another gear or two in the second week. He knows what it will take. I don't want him going out there and playing his best now. I want him to do it when it counts.

Nativenewyorker , 6/2/12 10:26 PM

rafaisthebest - that is correct

RickyDimon , 6/2/12 10:47 PM

When Rafa had all the giants in his half, many were salivating at the prospects of one of them winning the lottery against him, but they have all be slain, Delpo and Berdy are supposed to make a difficult draw..............who is laughing now!!!

nadline , 6/2/12 10:49 PM

I've heard Davenport and a few other commentators discussing the problem Lenglen poses for big hitters. According to them, Lenglen is a much slower court and favors the clay-courters more than Chartier, as it affords them more time to set up their points. It appears that Lenglen is suited to Nadal's and Djokovic's games more than Chartrier, thus, their fans should be glad that some of their matches are played there. Federer struggles on Lenglen and it shows in the score-line, as compared to Djokovic and Nadal who both seem to enjoy rout wins. The big hitters cannot rouble Nadal at the FO. coz their games are built on power and power does not do it on at the FO, especially on Lenglen.

As far as the draw goes for the top 4, I think that they all got a fair share of unseeded and qualis as opponents, and not facing a seeded player until R16. The journey-men are doing all of the hard work, which is too bad, and makes for rather boring matches. I doubt that the form of the top 4 cannot be taken too seriously due to the reasons I've given. R16 should give us a fair idea as to their true form.

scoretracker , 6/3/12 1:10 AM

I thought the slow courts were meant to favour the big hitters as it gives THEM more time to set up the big shots?

deuce , 6/3/12 7:37 AM

I was under the impression Lenglen was the faster court compared to Chatrier? And surely the pure clay courters wouldm prefer Chatrier because of the room it has beyond the baseline which allows them to stand far back receiving and hence returning the big hitters' shots?

I remember Ljubicic saying this is one of the reasons it is near impossible to beat Rafa at RG..........because of the size of Chatrier compared to other show courts at other Slams.........................

rafaisthebest , 6/3/12 10:05 AM

^^^ I thought so too and I think I heard about the slowness of the PC court. Rafa mentioned that it's difficult to play on the PC court, because it's a big court and can be very windy. I believe the PC court favors the true clay court players as it's slow and allows them to defend and construct points.

I remember Almagro, after receiving the shellacking from Rafa at the FO2008 QF where he only got three games from Rafa (three breadsticks), mentioned that he was overwhelmed playing on that court as it's a big court and he couldn't get used to it. Well he did better at the FO2010, still in the QF, pushing Rafa to two or three tiebreak sets though still lost in straight sets. I believe he'll make the QF this year again and most likely it'll be Rafa again at the QF! If that happens, then what a coincidence, that he's being meeting the Rafa when he (Rafa) is at his best!

luckystar , 6/3/12 10:40 AM

Oh give it up Fedfans and shame on you Ricky for feeding their whingeing.

Are we to believe that a 1-legged Berdych (he is nursing a hurt quad muscle) and a 1-legged Delpo (he has a gummy knee) are better, at this point, than a fully fit Monaco, or Ferrer or Almagro?

You really do not have any faith in Nole and Fed, do you that you should think a croaked Berdy and croaked Delpo is a threat to them?

rafaisthebest , 6/3/12 11:31 AM

Not better than Ferrer. But yeah maybe better than Monaco and Almagro. There's no doubt that Monaco and Almagro are more complete clay court players than Berdy/Delpo. But no aspect of their game is too strong to pose a threat to big guys. They cant beat Fed and Nole with their groundstrokes, forget beating Rafa.

abhirf , 6/3/12 11:58 AM

^^^I notice you are studiously refusing to acknowledge the injuries to Delpo and Berdy and how this affects their prospects...........

rafaisthebest , 6/3/12 12:01 PM

^^ i have posted my comment acknowledging the injuries that both players are having and how it hampers their chances.

abhirf , 6/3/12 12:12 PM

RITB, is it going to be a "hopping" match then? This I gotta see ;)

deuce , 6/3/12 5:22 PM

They showed Rafa blowing out his candles. The cake is quite something along with several bottles of champagne.

Twenty-six. Will we be hearing wedding bells soon? I think it's time.

nadline , 6/3/12 5:35 PM

i have been assuming they are waiting on getting married until Rafa is further along his career, not to start distractions, including possible babies. There is plenty of time for that later.
